Edizione limitata a 500 copie numerate sul retro del cofanetto, cofanetto con superficie lucida e senza codice a barre, vinile quintuplo (uno degli album e' un doppio), copertina di ciascun album ruvida a busta e senza codice a barre, label grigio cenere con scritte argento, catalogo DOY007. Pubblicato nel 2011 dalla Doxy, questo cofanetto raccoglie insieme quattro album di altrettanti autori, accomunati dall'essere jazzisti, e soprattutto dall'originale artwork delle copertine, che furono disegnate tutte da Andy Warhol. Gli album in questione sono ''Monk'' di Thelonious Monk (uscito nel 1954 su Prestige), ''Count Basie and his orchestra'' di Count Basie (uscito nel 1955 su RCA Victor e mai ristampato su cd, questa e' la prima ristampa vinilica), ''Trombone by three'' di Jay Jay Johnson/Kai Winding/Bennie Green (uscito su Prestige nel 1956 su disco a sedici giri, questa e la prima ristampa vinilica) e ''Vol. 2'' di Kenny Burrell (uscito su Blue Note nel 1956, questa e' la prima ristampa vinilica). Andy Warhol e' noto fra le altre cose per aver disegnato le copertine di epocali dischi rock quali il primo dei Velvet Underground e ''Sticky fingers'' degli Stones, ma in totale ha disegnato in vita sua piu' di cinquanta copertine, buona parte delle quali rimaste poco conosciute fino ad una recente esposizione intitolata ''Warhol live'' (2009). Disegnare copertine di lp fu uno dei primi lavori retribuiti di un allora giovane Warhol, fra la fine degli anni '40 ed i primi anni '50, e quelle dei quattro album qui contenuti risalgono ad un periodo in cui egli era un artista emergente (1954-1956). Gli stessi album qui contenuti sono piuttosto rari e per la maggior parte non erano stati finora ristampati in vinile, nonostante si tratti di jazzisti di assoluto valore. Everyone knows about The Velvet Underground & Nico cover or the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, but Warhol actually designed more than 50 album covers over the course of his career.

A few years ago one might have been able to pick up a used copy of some of these albums for a few bucks, but since the publication of Paul Marechal’s 2008 book Andy Warhol: The Record Covers (1949-1987), and the 2009 Warhol Live exhibition—the first ever comprehensive retrospective of Andy Warhol’s album cover artwork—original copies have been known to change hands for thousands of dollars. For the most part (3 out of the 4 albums in each box) have never been reissued on vinyl, and a few have also never been issued on CD, making this box set your only chance to own these Warhols. 

The four jazz albums collected in this box all come from that very exciting time in Warhol’s career (1954-1956) when he, in addition to being a successful commercial designer, was also an up and coming fine artist. Through these covers, we can also see the evolution of Warhol’s “blotted ink” style, which would become a hallmark of his later work. The flowers on Johnny Griffin’s The Congregation, on the other hand, are an early example of his Flowers prints of the following decade. The calligraphic writing employed on some of the albums was done by Warhol’s mother. Her distinct handwriting would grace many of her son’s works over the years.
