Andrew Oldham Orchestra. The Rolling Stones Songbook. Australian pressing. Stereo version. 1968. World Record Club. ST-4337. Record is in Very Good + condition, has been played and has lots of minor scratches and scuffs, plus one or two more noticeable scratches that don’t come up too harshly during play. The heavyweight vinyl is a pleasure to play and consistent to other World Record Club releases of the time. The laminated cover is in Very Good condition with some of the plastic covering bubbling up, spine crushed, splits, chips and ring wear. Inner paper sleeve. OK, so not the greatest condition but this record is just so bizarre that it should be a part of any serious collection in any condition. It’s like Sergio Leone directed a Carry On movie and let Morricone rework the Rolling Stones for the soundtrack. It’s that bizarre. In truth, it’s even more bizarre as Andrew Loog Oldham wasn’t just any square attempting to make some coin from refashioning the anti-establishment into something acceptable to the middle class but he was the Rolling Stones’ manager and record producer. And there was no joke intended in the middle-of-the-road interpretations of the Rolling Stones’ greatest hits contain within; Oldham was brought up on music like this and sought homage in the style of Phil Spector. He gathered a herd of session musicians, including Nicky Hopkins and John McLaughlin, and (it is said) some of the Rolling Stones themselves and created the Rolling Stones Songbook. The result is so wrong in so many ways but, paradoxically, so much fun and really should be in self-respecting 60s Brit Rock collection.
