Description

Andrew Hill – So In Love (Warwick W 2002, Mono, 1960) Before Black Fire, before Blue Note, Andrew Hill’s debut album So In Love offered a glimpse into the restless brilliance that would redefine post-bop. 

Recorded in Chicago in 1956 and released in 1960, this rare mono pressing features Hill’s early trio work with Malachi Favors (later of Art Ensemble of Chicago) and James Slaughter on drums.

The set blends standards like “Body and Soul” and “Old Devil Moon” with originals like “Chiconga” and “Penthouse Party,” revealing Hill’s tension between lyrical phrasing and rhythmic dissonance—a foreshadowing of his later avant-garde explorations. 

Warwick Records’ short-lived run makes this pressing especially scarce, and the vinyl here plays beautifully despite a structurally compromised jacket.

A must-have for collectors tracing Hill’s evolution from straight-ahead pianist to one of jazz’s most enigmatic composers.
