Andrew Hill ' Compulsion ' BLUE NOTE BLP 4217 (USA) MONO original N.Y. label - back cover has the address 43 West 61st St. New York 23 - issued in 1965 Freddie Hubbard : trumpet, fluegelhorn - John Gilmore : tenor sax, bass clarinet - Andrew Hill : piano - Cecil McBee : bass - Joe Chambers : drums - Nedi Qamar : African drums, African thumb piano - Renaud Simmons : conga - Richard Davis : bass on 'Premonition' only Side 1 : Compulsion - Legacy Side 2 : Premonition - Limbo All compositions by Andrew Hill Hill's intention was to '...construct an album expressing the legacy of the Negro tradition' and to use the piano more as a percussive instrument than a melodic one. The second number ' Legacy ' was dedicated to the Afro-American legacy, and is followed by ' Premonition ' wich Hill described as ' indication not alone a look ahead, but rather a sufficiently revealing look backward, so that you can really begin to know what may come ' . The album concludes with ' Limbo ' a 20-bar tune, a piece written to represent the state in which Hill considered the majority of Afro-Americans to be in at that time, not drawing on their heritage. Visual grading : even if record looks a strong Near Mint, I indicate it as EX++ only because on 1st track of side B ' Premonition ' there is a very light short crackling here and there for the first 3 - 4 minutes but this episodical trouble is very low and however well below the music's level. The vinyl has no scuffs, no scratch, no stains. Cover is EX++ too, no split, no cut, only a very light wear. There is also the original Blue Note inner sleeve in Near Mint condition. A superb copy!
