Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and rare LP from Calliope (CAL 1643, French pressing, gray label, stereo) features the great André Navarra's masterly rendition of Bach's Suites for Solo Cello No. 5 in C minor BWV 1010 and No. 6 in D Major BWV 1012, taken from his integral cycle recorded in Paris in 1977.
Navarra's set can easily be spoken of in the same breath as those by Gendron, Fournier, et al. and cast a deep spell in their searching eloquence and beauty of tone. One suspects that had he taped his interpretations for a more high-profile (which is not to suggest better) label, these remarkable recordings would be much better known and more highly prized. As it is, they remain a wonderful discovery awaiting the intrepid collector – outstanding!
This album was produced by Georges Kisselhoff. This recorded was the winner of the Prix de L'Academie du Disque Français.
Included is the full-size 4-page booklet with insightful liner notes by Frédéric Robert. The striking cover portrait of Navarra is uncredited, alas.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There are a couple of small chips to the laminate and a bit of yellowing along the open edge of the jacket. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the 4-page booklet is EX. There is a small bit of creasing, but that is all.
The condition of the LP is near-MINT and playback is superb – overall, a truly fine collector's copy.
