AllMusic Review by Eugene Chadbourne  [-]

Although the BYG label chalked up an amazing catalog of free jazz releases, the material involving French artists seems to have attracted the least attention. One reason is the sheer number of releases that free jazz fans might want to acquire from the black American artists this label turned its microphones, and corrupt accountants, on during a great influx of expatriates into the Paris community. Furthermore, the shabby playing of some of the French musicians brought in as collaborators on some of these albums would give a further nudge to any collector looking for titles to take off the check list. The members of this improvisational trio that were featured on this group did not go on to become key figures in the French improvisation scene, and musicians and enthusiasts from the free jazz scene have not made a habit of dropping the name of this record or this group as a way of showing hipness or depth of musical taste. Listeners who are always looking for something obscure to enjoy more than music by famous artists might want to check this record out, nonetheless. It really isn't that bad, and in the course of two side-long improvisations, the players find areas where interaction comes easy, and an interesting style of group composition is the result. The music is kind of half out of the jazz world, half out of the classical camp, with the pianist seeming to have at least a harmonic hangover from the latter style, while the cellist has neither the pizzicato technique nor arco intonation for great success in either style. Tenor player Philippe Mate gets into some good spaces inside the dark confines of the cello's tone, but has an unappealing tone and sloppy execution with more noisy effects.
