This handsome 2LP set – a still-sealed collector's copy from DG (2721 185, German pressing, white circle label, stereo) features Salvatore Accardo's justly famous traversal of Paganini's 24 Caprices Op. 1, as well as three other major works for solo violin.
The exact contents are as follows, all works by Nicolo Paganini:
24 Caprices Op. 1
Introduction and Variations on ‘Nel cor più non mi sento’ from Giovanni Paisello’s La Molinari
Introduction and Variations on ‘God save the Queen’ Op. 9
Sonata for Violin Solo in C Major
Wrote the authors of the ubiquitous Penguin Guide to Recorded Classical Music (2008 Edition):
"Accardo succeeds in making Paganini's most routine phrases sound like the noblest utterances and he invests these Caprices with an eloquence far beyond the sheer display they offer. There are no technical obstacles and, both in breath and tone and in grandeur of conception, he is peerless. He observes all the repeats and has an excellent CD transfer."
These remarkable works were recorded in the warm acoustics of the Herkulessaal, Residenz, Munich, in May 1977 (Director of Production: Rainer Brock / Recording Director: Werner Mayer / Recording Engineer: Günter Hermanns).
The memorable cover photo of Accardo was taken by Gianbarberis, Italy. The reverse side of the jacket, as well as the interior panels, carry insightful liner notes by Uwe Kraemer (in German and French), as well as by Edward Neill (in English and Italian).
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor bumping at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owner's markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an outstanding collector's copy.
The condition of the 2 LPs is MINT. These are still-sealed, unplayed copies – ideal collector's copies.
