I tell you without reservation, that this is one of the very finest recordings you will ever play on your hi-fi system.
Fact is, in my hi-fi salon years back, when I first approached a turntable with this LP, the audiophiles in attendance during our listening session laughed out loud.
“You’re playing a Turnabout?” they asked, incredulous.
I couldn’t blame them; after all, we had been playing Decca Head series LPs, a few Lyritas, and a Gale record or two.
But I will also tell you, that the moment the stylus hit those Turnabout grooves, not a jaw in the place didn’t drop and remain so, as indeed Donald Johanos and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra delivered BILLY THE KID with about as much presence, dynamics, and “in the room” sound as an LP should be allowed to muster.
To this day, I consider it in the top ten LPs of all time, a record I might add, that was on the original TAS list and only removed when the re-issues didn’t hold up to this copy before you now.
Cover has mild shelf and the top seam-split neatly repaired with tape. Inside, is the original Turnabout pressing in near-mint playing condition.
If this record doesn’t root you completely in place with its uncanny sense of “being there,” I’ll eat my tonearm.
