It was great to be a young head banger in the early 80’s. Almost every week a new metal band would appear on the horizon, putting out a great demo, single or album. It all began around 1980 in the with British bands like Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Saxon, Vardis, Diamond Head, Girlschool, Tank, Raven, Angel Witch and many, many others. These newcomers toured almost non-stop and set many stages alight, not the least in the Netherlands. Their exciting shows and releases left a huge impression on the Dutch audience.

In a matter of months countless young and aspiring musicians locked themselves into the bedroom or garage and started practicing. For other, already existing bands the untamable roar of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal was the last push they needed to find their proper direction. The music climate was in their favor as well. Inspired by the do-it-yourself mentality of the late 70’s punk movement most bands didn’t wait for that big, fat, juicy major record deal to land on their door step. The bands took matters in their own hands. They recorded and sold their own demos, thus creating a flourishing tape trading circuit. Tracks were also spread via independently released singles, EP’s and compilations.

Band like Picture, Sword, Frankenstein, Vault, Highway Chile, Impact, Allied Forces, Attila and many others played the clubs, appeared on festivals and all created a dedicated following. Although most bands were heavily inspired by the heavy metal mayhem from across the North Sea, each had their own style, drawing influences from Iron Maiden, Saxon, Judas Priest, Motörhead and others. The classic metal sound of bands like Highway Chile and Picture co-existed very peacefully next to the brutal power of Hammerhawk and Aggressor, the breakneck guitar madness of Sword, the punk-flavored fury of The Vopo’s, the proggy delicacy of Lady or the sword-waving Manowar-worship of Valkyrie. It all lasted ‘til the mid to late 80’s.

COBRA - WARRIORS OF THE DEAD ~ Were formed in the early 80's from the ashes of TALON and managed to gain a cult following posthumously, when collectors and NWOBHM fans started discovering the great music.

Cobra is yet another in the row of countless NWOBHM bands who occupied metal scene in the ’80s. Their debut, ’’Warriors of the Dead’’ came up pretty late for NWOBHM standards, in 1985, when most of the bands did or didn’t make a breakthrough, and generally, the genre was fading away. This album is as raw and unrefined as it can get, in every department, no pretentiousness whatsoever. The music is a classical NWOBHM fare combined with speed metal. On several songs, it sounds very powerful and convincing, its appeal will be very much for  die-hard fans of ’80s metal, since it carries big dose of nostalgia for the bygone times, the best for metal as a musical genre.

Let’s start with highlights: the title track is a very good speed metal, it’s a true kickass opener. ’’Dying Man’s Song’’, is the only ballad on the album, and it’s probably the most unrefined and unpolished ballad I’ve ever heard. Usually, ballads are supposed to be calm and gentle, yet it  sounds very savage and untamed. ’’We Rock You’’ is a total ’80s anthem with a truly unforgettable main riff and great, though short, melodic solo. Finally, the best by far – ’’Stand with Me’’. Now that’s heavy, fast, catchy and memorable – all at the same time. Especially good is the beginning with speed metal riff and solo, and then it becomes a total ’80s heavy metal with great chorus. Probably the best song this band has ever written.

’’Cobra’’ and ’’China Syndrome’’ are pretty good. Edmonson’s performance on ’’Cobra’’ is by far the best and most convincing on the whole album, he completely nailed that song! If you, like me, totally worship ’80s metal, then I recommend this album, it’s just another piece of your favorite music. You can’t go wrong with this, it’s a worthy addition to your collection.

SYE - TURN ON THE FIRE ~ were formed in Toronto, Canada in the early 80's by the charismatic guitar player and singer Bernie Carlos and after releasing some demo tapes, they released their debut album in 1985 entitled "Turn on the Fire". 

I would highlight STREET QUEEN, RUNNIN' SCARED, ROCK'N'ROLL GIRLS or instrumental TURN ON THE FIRE. It's a very heavy metal album especially if you like the direct and simple heavy metal to what many other Canadian groups did at the same time as DEATH DEALER / DEAF DEALER, WITCHKILLER or TZAR this LP of SYE is going to rock you. They play heavy metal as we learned in the 80's. With solos and leads, with bridges and refrains. With voice melodies directing rhythms and vice versa. Immediate and easy-to-understand lyrics, more intimate, but in general such was the theme in the 80's. Bernie Carlos's leading mind, he sings and plays guitar, composes and sings, on all the songs on the album. Several similarities to Anvil, sound and performance. Alright, 'Runnin' Scared 'reminded me of Metallica's original riff but soon changes to something completely different. Generally, the compositions hold a basic rhythm / speed and are then cemented by some tasty riffs and vocal excitement.
