THIS IS THE ORIGINAL 1ST PRESSING RECORDED IN HIGH FIDELITY THAT GOLDMINE VALUES AT $1,000.00+ IN NRMT CONDITION! 

Screamin' Jay Hawkins was the most outrageous performer extant during rock's dawn. Prone to emerging out of coffins on-stage, a flaming skull named Henry his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable.

Hawkins' life story is almost as bizarre as his on-stage schtick. Originally inspired by the booming baritone of Paul Robeson, Hawkins was unable to break through as an opera singer. His boxing prowess was every bit as lethal as his vocal cords; many of his most hilarious tales revolve around Jay beating the hell out of a musical rival.

His most successful recording, "I Put a Spell on You" (1956), was selected as one of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. According to the AllMusic Guide to the Blues, "Hawkins originally envisioned the tune as a refined ballad." The entire band was intoxicated during a recording session where "Hawkins screamed, grunted, and gurgled his way through the tune with utter drunken abandon." The resulting performance was no ballad but instead a "raw, guttural track" that became his greatest commercial success and reportedly surpassed a million copies in sales, although it failed to make the Billboard pop or R&B charts. The performance was mesmerizing, although Hawkins himself blacked out and was unable to remember the session. Afterward he had to relearn the song from the recorded version. Meanwhile the record label released a second version of the single, removing most of the grunts that had embellished the original performance; this was in response to complaints about the recording's overt sexuality. Nonetheless it was banned from radio in some areas.

Soon after the release of "I Put a Spell on You", radio disc jockey Alan Freed offered Hawkins $300 to emerge from a coffin onstage. Hawkins accepted and soon created an outlandish stage persona in which performances began with the coffin and included "gold and leopard skin costumes and notable voodoo stage props, such as his smoking skull on a stick – named Henry – and rubber snakes." These props were suggestive of voodoo, but also presented with comic overtones that invited comparison to "a black Vincent Price."

THIS IS AN ORIGINAL 1958 1ST PRESSING ON THE EPIC YELLOW LABEL WITH BLACK PRINT #LN 3448 RECORDED IN HIGH FIDELITY! THIS IS THE DEEP GROOVE PRESSING WITH 1A STAMPED IN THE DEAD WAX OF SIDE 1. GENERALLY CONSIDERED AN EARLY 1ST PRESSING.

VISUALLY, THE THICK VINYL PLATTER LOOKS TO BE IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION HOWEVER IT HAS SOME ISSUES.

I HAVE EXAMINED THIS UNDER BRIGHT LIGHT AND DO SEE THAT THE RARE PLATTER HAS RETAINED MOST ALL OF IT'S DEEP RICH LUSTER! PLENTY OF SHINE HERE! THERE IS SOME SCUFFING AND SOME VERY FINE HAIRLINES BUT NOTHING EVEN CLOSE TO BEING FEEL-ABLE

 I DO HOWEVER SEE A SERIES OF VERY FINE LINES THAT RUN AROUND SEVERAL GROOVES LOCATED ON SIDE II THE SONG "OL' MAN RIVER"& AGAIN AT THE VERY END OF "IF YOU ARE BUT A DREAM" & THE VERY BEGINNING OF "GIVE ME MY BOOTS AND SADDLE" YOU CAN SEE THIS IN THE ABOVE PICTURE. SHE PLAYS THRU WITH NO PROBLEM BUT THERE IS SOME MOMENTARY UNWELCOME DISTORTION IN THESE AREAS. LASTING SEVERAL REVOULTIONS. THE RECORD APPEARS TO BE LIGHTLY PLAYED SO I'M NOT CERTAIN IF THIS IS SOME KIND OF GROOVE WEAR OR SOME PRESSING ANOMALY. 

THE LABELS ARE FREE FROM ANY WRITING OR STICKERS SHOW A FEW LIGHT SPINDLE TRAILS.

THE FRONT COVER PRESENTS DECENTLY. THERE IS NO WRITING, TAPE OR STICKERS ANYWHERE. THERE IS THE OBVIOUS RING/SHELF WEAR EVIDENT MOSTLY ON JUST THE FRONT SIDE. THERE IS A 4" UPPER SEAM SPLIT AND A 2 1/2 " LOWER SEAM SPLIT AND THE SPINE IS HEAVLY WORN,SPLIT AND MOSTLY UNREADABLE. THE REVERSES SIDE LINER NOTES ARE VERY INFORMATIVE & PERFECTLY READABLE. THERE IS A LIGHT STAIN ALONG THE MOUTH ON THE REVERSE SIDE AS SHOWN.

THERE ARE SOME MINOR DINGS/CREASES/SCUFFS & SOILING AS SHOWN.

MINT

Mint records are in most cases sealed in original shrink wrap. The only wear permissible is to the shrink wrap itself.

NEAR-MINT

NM records have glossy vinyl. There are no visible defects such as writing, tape, or stickers on the labels. The labels should not contain any spindle marks(from someone blindly trying to put the record on the turntable) The vinyl may have a few extremely fine hairline scratches or light scuffs that do not affect the sound quality. The vinyl will "appear" to have been unplayed (It may very well have been played and well-cared for)The album cover will have NO writing, tape, creases, folds, seam splits,stains, ring wear or Promo holes or cuts!

VG+(EXCELLENT)

VG+records have glossy vinyl. Slight signs of wear, including light scuffs, very light scratches or slight warping that does not seriously affect the listening experience is permissible. Very slight intermittent background noise mostly in the quiet passages is acceptable.

The album cover will have no more than three of the following imperfections: light writing such as initials or name in one area, minor creasing, seam splits not larger than 1". Neatly taped seams of 2" or less.It may also contain very slight ring wear or discoloration, a promo stamp, punch hole or cut-out as originally sold.

VG

VG Records have more obvious flaws such as more pronounced scratches & lack of gloss. Groove wear and scratches deep enough to be felt with a fingernail are common. When played there will be surface noise but it should not continuously overpower the music. There are NO skips permissible with no more than 1.5 grahams of tracking force. It is common to hear crackling and pops especially in the quiet passages. The labels may contain writing such as a persons name or initials or it may contain a piece of tape or sticker with or without writing. The cover may have some seam splits, writing, tape, stickers, ring wear and scuffs.

VG-

VG- All of the defects listed VG category would be more pronounced. The record will play through without skipping WITH tracking force. A quick skip or two with no more that 2.5 grahams of tracking force are permissible. The record will have many obvious flaws but still enjoyable to listen to. Generally if the record is rare, it is still highly collectible.

G/G+

Good (G), Good Plus (G+) Good does not mean Bad! A record in Good or Good Plus condition can be put onto a turntable and will play through without skipping WITH tracking force. A quick skip or two with no more that 2.5 grahams of tracking force are permissible. It will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear (on a styrene record, the groove will be starting to turn white). A cover or sleeve will have seam splits,especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.
