Label/Format: A&M – original matt format with smooth surfaces (please see my label scans). Please note: this is a red translucent record, so the record will appear grey on my reflective scanner. Translucent means light will pass through as seen on my picture, and will appear with an eerie red affect. Viewed normally, the record looks a normal black.

Label Conditions: Both incredibly clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These show little, more seen under angled light, these too on very revealing labels.

Cat Number: 68089.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 145 grams. A very good solid weight.

Brief Info: The second and final Asylum Choir album that features Leon Russell and Marc Benno. Issue was delayed for a couple of years for legal reasons after the 1968 debut on Mercury. Songs of a similar style and the material is again mixed. This a top original that includes the scarce lyric insert sheet and a lovely first pressed red translucent record that plays superbly. These first and elusive translucents were pressed on purer vinyl and sound quality in most cases top-drawer. As seen in my picture, light passes through it when held near a bright bulb.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Made and printed in England by Shorewood. Includes original inner sleeve and the elusive lyric insert sheet that is printed on both sides.

Cover Front & Back: Any wear to either side is light and faint: gentle rim impression from the thick heavy record is near unavoidable, but no penetrating ring wear, even to the very dark back that is near exception put into context. Gentle darkening around the rim shape on the front near the top and bottom, but almost as light as it gets, and the lack of creasing another major positive, any present are few, fine and faint. An attractive vintage wear-prone cover.

Top Edge: Clean, straight any traces of rubbing light and faint.

Bottom Edge: One fairly light scuff just left of centre, little else.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with just a little slight thickening or minor burr traces seen viewed end-on. Record entered on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, the ends very slightly tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: Any tip rubs are very small and light, very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: An excellent all-round example of this quite elusive cover, it will prove very difficult to find much better. One that should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): barely any real wear ageing. A solid plain white, unlined inner. All edges now unsplit after a tiny bottom edge centre repair that is practically invisible. I do this to stop any potential future widening.

The Lyric Insert Sheet: MINT: as made and quite elusive. Printed both sides with great pictures of the duo and the song lyrics. You will not find this better and of course, guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++):a very impressive visual copy that is very clean, shiny and heavily pressed on red translucent vinyl. It appears black with normal viewing, only under a bright will the eerie red glow show as seen in my picture. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks very few, light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. This appears very little played and visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This really impressive record plays up to, and most all even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early, red-glow translucent pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
