Label Conditions & Info: As close to new as you will find this scarce 1975 repressing. The reason? – an unopened Island box was recently discovered in an old warehouse in the North of England that contained a batch of this title. Hence all (stating the obvious) were unplayed, this not based on counting spindle marks and making an educated guess, this is a fact. I did play this album once just to check the pressing quality and it plays as you would hope and expect – perfectly.

Cat Number: ILP 967.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: A very gentle and minor wave only, it has NO sound whatsoever on the music. No turntable would have any issues whatsoever with this minor gentle mini warp.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. A very good weight for a record of the mid-70s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Originals have always been rare, but did the pink rim reissues fair any better?, well probably not. Clearly this unopened box was not needed back in 1975 and sales were have been equally sparse. To locate a batch of brand new, unplayed copies, albeit repressings, still makes for a rare find and album. I bought several from this rare find but I have a few already and they are running out fast – a rare opportunity as time is running out.

Original Year of Release: December 1967. The pink rim repressing was issued in 1975.

Brief Info: Issued at the back end of the ‘Summer of Love’ this one-off ‘lost’ psychelic album that disappeared practically unnoticed and that with one of the greatest colourful psych covers from this period ever. Lack of promotion for an unknown band made this a leading loss-maker for Island Records and it simply faded away lost in the vaults. Art were a prelude to Spooky Tooth minus Gary Wright who did go on to record many albums on Island with some moderate success but ‘Supernatural Fairy Tales’ was doomed to failure and now in demand from psych collectors and record connoisseurs worldwide – and justifiably so. This has some supreme moments blending psych with progressive rock, it utilises many sound effects and various instrumentation and at times has a quite primitive sound. Often described as unique with a very ‘British’ psych sound, ironically their best known song is a rendition of the Buffalo Springfield classic ‘For What It’s Worth’ included here and renamed ‘What’s That Sound’ and beautifully performed it is too. The impressive cover is highly noteworthy with artwork that still astonishes even though the reprintings had no laminate and vary with a brown border. There were no stereo pressings of this record, even this pink rim reissues were mono which means it sounds just the same (thank goodness). To discover a batch of unplayed pink rim copies some 36 years after it was repressed is an unlikely find, but stranger things have happened I guess – the record has now been played just once to check the pressing quality, the cover is unworn as you will ever find one, just mild record impression as these had been laid down rather than upright, a trace of bowing being somewhat critical, sure this will disappear when stored correctly in an upright position. Even the original St Peter’s Square blue lined inner is like new. Just look as the picture, when was the last time you saw one this unaged? With the first pressings commanding huge prices, this superb mono repressing in this condition should offer near equal satisfaction without breaking the bank balance. Makes good sense to me.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): only due to very slight record impression due to box compression for 36 years and a few minor surface marks seen under light. A single, unlaminated format with matt finish, printed and made in England.

Front: Lovely psych and very colourful artwork that looks as close to near as you will ever find. Slight compression on the spine edge but the spine itself is totally erect and uncrushed. Under light, slight dulling and surface trace marks seen near the top and bottom edges.

Cover Back: Pretty much as per the front, NO ringwear as no ink has been removed. With normal viewing, this indeed does look almost new, and in real terms – IS!

Top Edge: As made.

Bottom Edge: A couple of near microscopic rub traces, one faint minuscule rub on the right corner. As stated above, very lightly bowed, but normal vertical storage will easily straight this out.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, razor sharp with no wear as you would expect. Record entered on this edge.

Spine and Text: Mint as made, all text pristine.

Corners: Clean, ultra sharp with barely a tip rub to be seen.

Cover Summary: This is a rare item like this, make no mistake, hidden away in an unopened box since the mid-70s. This will never wear well unless stored carefully, this untouched for 36 years – amazing, but true – such a lovely cover deserves to be seen like this again.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): just mild record impression barely enough to not be full Mint. This takes you back to the pink rim days when these inners hit the market. This 1975 version has the 22 st peters square address.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT: and as close as they ever get, how could I grade a once-played record that has not light-of-day since the mid-70s anything else? Was tempted not to play this but I just had to check the pressing quality. Barely a blemish to be seen with two immaculate playing surfaces. This Island classic will rarely be found quite like this again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This then unplayed record sounds as good as it looks and is a top quality EMI pressing. Just a slight wave near the rim edge with no effect on sound. I reitterate this minor wave will not worry any turntable made, that is guaranteed. Delighted Island decided not to mess with the sound and all the mono qualities are retained. So many originals were subjected to heavy abuse by old record players of the time and the clear advantage of a later one is, most avoided it. If you want records this age that have barely been played or handled, well it’s here – exactly as it should – this justifiably reminds of new – enjoy!

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
