Of course Aretha actually arrived on her previous album (I Never Loved The Man (the Way I Love you) , her first with Atlantic, but who can resist a bit of honest to goodness alliteration. Okay, like many another soul album on Stax or Motown, it's on the face of it a collection of contemporary covers, mixed with older classics and a smattering of new material. And yet it transcends those limitations sublimely thanks to the superb playing of the crack Memphis sessioneers, marvellous vocal support from the Sweet Inspirations but mostly and unsurprisingly due to Aretha's singing. Unlike divas of recent years, there's no nostrils-flaring over-singing here, just totally in-synch phrasing and styling, adapted excellently for each number.

She unflinchingly takes on white-boy garage rock, with great upbeat versions of the Stones "Satisfaction" in a cover that Mick Jagger preferred to Otis Redding's and ? And the Mysterians "96 Tears", even if the lyrics for each don't easily read across to a female perspective. She also takes on with some panache another recent hit by a bad boy from a different generation, Sinatra's over-the-top big-band "That's Life".

The slower numbers are even better as Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd and Arif Mardin sympathetically employ strings in stunning tracks like "Never Let Me Go", "Prove It", "I Wonder" Willie Nelson's "Night Life" and the arresting death-bed lament of "Going Down Slow". There are moments in all these songs where you just want to close your eyes and luxuriate in the pools of sound created.

As ever, her instinctive love of gospel music infuses much of the material here, especially the heavy-duty intro to the old country standard "You Are My Sunshine" and the evangelistic feel of "Ain't Nobody Gonna Turn Me Around" which although a love song could easily be construed as a support for the Civil Rights Movement of the day, which just leaves the rollicking "Baby I Love You" to wrap things up handsomely at the end.

While this album may not contain any of Aretha's huge and heavily rotated hit songs such as "Respect" it does feature "Baby, I Love You", a big hit at the time of release in 1967. And of course the whole album is laced with beautiful southern soul so it has everything you'd expect from the sound of Aretha Franklin.

Playing this record is all the more poignant given her recent passing but when you have a back catalogue that includes great albums such as this you know that she will live on.

Aretha requires no introduction. If you are into soul vocals, hers is the voice from heaven. The queen explodes on this 1967 album - her second for Atlantic - with such a ferocious intensity and passion that you will not believe your ears. The album includes "Baby I love you" , one of Aretha's classic mid-60's soul singles. (a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (MINOR STAIN-LIKE SCUFF NOTED ON 'GOING DOWN SLOW', NOT EXPECTED TO BE AUDIBLE)

(b)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(e)         In addition, Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(f)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                          THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has some tiny, faint, barely visible writing on its front side (ON THE PROMO STICKER ONLY; NONE ON THE COVER ITSELF)

-       Cover has the original price sticker, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-       Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (front side) and 4 (back side)

-       Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-       Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
