The Houston vocal group's final LP for Atlantic Records is 28 minutes of merriment. Their next two appeared on Philadelphia International. This finale continued the good vibes established on their two previous Atlantic albums. Producers/writers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff employ the same lighthearted production on the Drells as they did the Intruders. The joyous title track isn't about gang-banging, but a dancing confrontation that Gamble & Huff spice with a convoluted but infectious break. The cutesy, compelling "My Balloon Is Going Up" warms your heart for no apparent reason; it's just a good, happy sound. Speaking of the Intruders, "Girl You're Too Young," a Gamble, Archie Bell, and Thom Bell song, has the "Cowboys to Girls" guys written all over it; "Here I Go Again," another R&B hit, is more formulaic. "Houston, Texas" pays homage to Archie Bell & the Drells' hometown, but they didn't write it -- non-Texans Gamble, Huff, and Bobby Martin did. Others deserving a shout-out include Archie Bell's "Mama Didn't Teach Me That Way," Mikki Farrow and Mervin and Melvin Steals' "Green Power," and the Steals' tutorial "Go for What You Know." As Mystro and Lyric, the Steals later wrote their biggest record, "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love," for the Spinners.

THE WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new (visible, but entirely superficial, scuff noted along entire side one).

(b)            White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.  (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a partially split bottom seam (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
