No doubt, the fact that the strong rep this album has garnered among those who like it, tends to build high hopes (too high?) for a record that really couldn't have the chops to deliver. After all, it's only pop/psych, the stuff generally regarded as light weight fluff, and window dressing to "real" psychedelia, right? - WRONG! Regardless of one's prejudices, pop/psych is probably the best pigeon-hole for this album, but by no means accurately describes all of it's contents. Late 60's underground Britain was a hot-bed of blues rock, and there are a few entries on this LP that qualify.The psychedelic aspects of the record are primarily due to the stunning guitar work, though there are some minor uses of effects, here and there. An over-all thumbnail review might look like this: a fairly typical Brit-pop sound, with excellent psych flavored mat'l, featuring nice vocal harmonies, lots of piano and great guitar, some horns and strings on one cut, and a few blues covers. It's not all great, but I didn't find anything I would rate less than pretty good.
