Recorded at Hall Auditorium, Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio, on May 18 and 19, 1978

Seated on rotating chairs atop vertical risers, Composition For Four Orchestras (1978) explored the textural possibilities of a three dimensional music. Each orchestra comprised of conductor, two trumpets, three trombones, one tuba, one piccolo flute, one alto flute, two oboes, two clarinets, one bass clarinet, one bassoon, ten violins, four violas, four cellos, three basses, one harp and three sets of percussion. More than three hundred pages, Comp. 82 was a completely notated music. Bristling with intensity, the overall focus remained on listener interpretation relative to their position of the sound. So, the logical position for the audience was the centre, positioning each orchestra in a corner of the space. It is a monumental work, stemming from the realms of Stockhausen's multi-orchestra works Gruppen and Carré, Webern's Six Pieces For Orchestra and Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces, and developing a dense jungle of textures across the entire timbral range of the orchestra.
