Various : ANTHOLOGY OF AMERICAN FOLK MUSIC / VOLUME TWO : SOCIAL MUSIC DOUBLE LP BOX (Folkways [USA] FA 2952)
Records are Excellent with light sleeve scuffs only; box is VG with a 9" split up the seam on the back (the seam that holds the two halves of the box together), two tears on the top of the box, and some minor wear. Early pressing with the rarely seen original cover; I'm not sure if this is original all around (I honestly don't know how to tell with these) but the vinyl's pretty heavy, so it could be. "117 W. 46 St." address and 1952 copyright on labels; "165 W. 46 St." address and 1952 copyright on booklet; no address or date on box. With 28-page booklet (NM), including notes on all the songs from all three volumes (all three had the same booklet). This is the second volume (see our other auctions for volume one as well) of the massively important and great Anthology series, compiled by legendary artist / filmmaker / archivist Harry Smith, and originally issued as three double-LP sets in 1952. This is a '60s pressing with "701 7th Ave" address on labels, and "43 W. 61th St" address with 1967 copyright on the box. In compliling this series, Smith rescued a wealth of lost recordings of American folk, blues, bluegrass, gospel, etc, and pretty much single-handedly began what would become the "folk revival" of the '60s (of which one of the major themes was seeking out the performers on these sets to be newly recorded, play folk festivals, etc).
