Unmittelbar nachdem er zwei Oscars für seine Filmmusik zu "Breakfast at Tiffany's" gewonnen hatte, schrieb Henry Mancini die Filmmusik zur Safari-Komödie "Hatari!" unter der Regie von Howard Hawks mit John Wayne in der Titelrolle.
»Der erste Eindruck ist der einer lustigen Mischung aus Jazz und Afro-Exotik, Dschungeltrommeln kombiniert mit einer klassischen Bop-Combo. An anderer Stelle jedoch entscheidet sich der Soundtrack für gefälligen, aber eindeutig Western Jazz, nur unterbrochen durch den von afrikanischen Instrumenten gespielten Sampler "The Sounds of Hatari", in dem man ein hübsch klingendes präpariertes Klavier zu hören bekommt. Die Filmemacher hofften vermutlich, dass "Just For Tonight", der Song von Mercer und Carmichael, genau so ein Erfolg werden würde wie "Moon River" aus "Breakfast At Tiffanys“; wenn aber etwas von "Hatari!" in der Erinnerung haftet, dann der unglaublich alberne "Baby Elephant Walk", der zum berühmt-berüchtigten musikalischen Kürzel wurde für Verrücktheit jeglicher Art.« — AllMusic.com.

»This is at first a fun blend of jazz and Afro-exotica, jungle drums mixed with a classic bop combo. Elsewhere, however, the soundtrack opts for some pleasant, but very Western jazz, only stopping for the African instrument-sampler "The Sounds of Hatari", which features some nice treated piano. The filmmakers were probably hoping that the Mercer and Carmichael song "Just for Tonight" would be as much a success as Tiffany's "Moon River", but if "Hatari!" is memorable for anything, it's for the incredibly goofy "Baby Elephant Walk", which has gone on to be infamous musical shorthand for kookiness of any stripe.« — AllMusic.com.
