Description

AMERICAN BLUES EXCHANGE 'Blueprints' Double LP (Italy, Akarma, Catalogue #AK 136/2) Brand new/unplayed copy of SOLD OUT/LONG OUT OF PRINT Akarma label, limited double LP edition of rare 1969 album (plus three additional previously unreleased tracks) of psych-era influenced blues-rock from American Blues Exchange.

'Known for decades on the obscure LP circuit, Blueprints may confuse or even disappoint those looking for psychedelic dementia or a hardrock buzz. Genre-wise, it could be called local white blues-rock, even if only a couple of the tracks follow trad blues structures. The excellent opening tune has a bit of westcoast flavor and strong dual guitar work, and the long closer "Age Child" gets into a cool, ballsy groove which again has a Bay Area feel along a QMS/Steve Miller Band/Stained Glass axis. But otherwise the vibe is more laidback and rootsy, like "Cold Iron Blues", a slow 12-bar with a Butterfield Blues Band sound. There's an odd flute track, perhaps inspired by Blues Project. Beyond this smattering of references, it's band originals all through and a commitment which holds the work together better than most private pressings, thanks partly to a non-macho vocalist who isn't brilliant in terms of tone but has good presence and feel. The dual guitar work is probably the band's most important asset though, and Blueprints is a given favorite within the long-running fan-base (mainly in Europe) for these guitar-oriented, ballsy rock albums, alongside First Friday and Farm. Like the somewhat similar (but inferior) Catherine's Horse these were college kids, who came out of Trinity College and mostly played parties in the area.' - Patrick Lundborg/Acid Archives
