Description
ALTERNATIVE ULSTER #1 ~ 1978 Punk Fanzine
Rare original copy of important & influential Northern Irish Punk Fanzine - Stiff Little Fingers' 1st 45 was named after this mag.
However it's NOT the first issue: Alternative Ulster has a peculiar & unique numbering system i.e. no system at all - "hacky and providential... & ... f**ked by my own surreal numerological scheme" as the founder Gavin Martin described it in a much later interview http://www.spitrecords.co.uk/fanzines.htm
Consequentially, Issue #1 is by no means the first issue! Because it mentions inside on page 2 "How displeased we were with the first two A.U.s. We were really experimenting with those, even tho we put some hard work into them". this issue (#1) must be at least #3. Clearly, this issue is far more polished in all departments than the preceeding ones.
This one:
12pp A4 printed both sides with coloured pages and far less fade-outs than previous. Featuring gig review of: The Clash @ McMordie Hall, Queens 17/12/77 + Joe Strummer interview; Singles of '77 reviews; pieces on Local Talent: Rudi, Stiff Little Fingers, Roof Wrecks, the Outcasts, The Buzzcocks, Spunk album, two-page piece on Live Boomown Rats gig & lots of London Calling gig reviews - Damned, Dead Boys & Drones @ the Roundhouse; The Jam & New Hearts @ Bracknell Sports Hall; Modelmania & Killjoys @ the vortex; Brakes @ the Music Machine; Sham 69 & Rat Scabies Band @the Rainbow; Advertising @ RHC Egham; Blast Furnace & Heatwaves @Strodes College, & The Heartbreakers & Models in Croydon.
