Label Conditions: Four stunning labels: very clean, fresh and highly attractive, practically definitive examples that without any doubt, have barely been handled or likely played. Each label has between one to three light and faint spindle marks only. The same goes for any fingermarks, and these labels tend to show up any freely, there are none worthy of mention and these four will prove immensely difficult to find better on this rare and legendary album.

Weight of these Records: 119 / 122 grams. It seems quite typical weights for this album.

Rarity: One of the rarest albums on the UK Atlantic ‘Plum’ label. This was issued towards the end of the format before the Kinney orange and green label versions came in. This was soon to be repressed on the Capricorn label, as per the original US versions. This album when issued in the UK, included either a UK or US cover, I guess they wanted to use existing stock of American covers first? This copy has the heavy US version with the Capricorn credits and in this case, one of the very best examples I have ever seen bar none. The Plum records are English-pressed of course and are simply stunning! I will rarely ever consider grading any played record as Mint, but if I cannot for this pair I don’t think I ever could. All four playing surfaces are practically pristine and offer total sound perfection fron start to finish. A copy time has overlooked and this set left me aghast. Truly, this could conceivably one of the best copies in existence – a bold statement maybe – but I can hardly see how this could be beaten for looks or sound. Earlier this year, I offered one in equally supreme condition, that one had the more flimsy UK cover. You could go a lifetime to find both variant of this album quite like this, but miracles do a happen I guess. This is a rare album and even more so when found probably played just once prior to my sound check. Rarely will the cover be found quite so unworn too and surely a copy for the connoisseur collector and those who simply want the best available – this is very special.

Original Year of Release: Issued 1971, right on the fringe of the transition period to the new Kinney labels. It then went directly to Capricorn.

Matrix Nos: [NOTE: side 1 backs side 4] 2402035 A // 1 1 2 4 & 2402036 B // 1 1 1 6 & 2402036 A // 1 1 1 4 & 2402036 A // 3 1 1 4. (Record 2 is error corrected A and B’s transposed). Sometimes this set is found with the incorrect label placed on the records, ‘Whippin’ Post’ often switched but this copy has the correct labels on the correct sides which I feel is always better.

Album Information: The band’s third album and this must have raised a few eyebrows for the few who bought it back in the early 70s. Without doubt one of the greatest live documents of the rock era. This supreme double set captures one of the tightest bands ever, featuring their original line-up before Duane Allman and Berry Oakley were cruelly lost. Beautiful melodic lengthy workouts with blistering dual guitars and drummers and of course featuring Duane’s superb blues vocals. This is a guitar tour de force and listening to this again just makes you wonder where all the guitar heroes have gone these days. Fillmore did not chart in the UK but sold well in the US peaking at 13. UK copies are never easily found as originals and this copy on offer is on the highly collectable original Atlantic ‘Plum’ format. Whatever cover version holds a Plum copy – American or British, it was never laminated and being predominately black will usually be found heavily worn. This copy has the US sleeve, heavily made and in superb condition. Both records look barely even played and they sound magnificent. A copy that will thrill collectors, play this loud and enjoy one of the most breathtaking live albums ever put to record – this is as close to like being there you will ever experience these days. I regard this as a Anglo-American masterpiece.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(++): and this does it scant justice. An unlaminated gatefold format with a semi-gloss surface sheen. The inside is matt finished with very lightly textured surfaces. This was printed and made in the US and has their Capricorn credit.

Cover Front: I hardly think it possible to find this heavy-duty American cover better. The front is incredibly fresh with any rub traces to the semi-gloss surface very faint indeed, only really detectable (just) under angled light. No creasing, scuff or dinks and retaining that lovely rich darkness as if it had never been handled or exposed to light. The lack of ring marks or even impression is amazing. A famous front that is unlikely to be found much better.

Cover Back: Exactly as above – magnificent – this cover is as close to my highest grading of Mint(-) as they get.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Pristine Mint as made, I am not going to nit-pick this magnificent centrefold.

Top Edges: Barely any traces of rubbing at all, any present are minuscule. A small compression just seen, this being very critical. Both are unsplit or stressed.

Bottom Edges: Both practically Mint as made.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both edges are clean and sharp with again, hardly any traces of any wear and there is no feathering. Both guaranteed untrimmed. Any burr or thickening traces are tiny, few and faint. The two records are stored via these two vulnerable edges.

Spine and Text: Very thick, robust, solid with no compression or tilt. Folded squarely, the edges meet up close to flush and parallel too. The lack of wear to this spine is almost remarkable, few avoid it. This is still very black with all text is present and unrubbed. Both fold hinges and even the ends are practically devoid of wear.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny and light, a tiny trace of fading on the top right tips but little else. NO dinks or tip creases – a fact I can hardly believe, but it’s true. All retain near mint shape with superb crisp definition. Try finding another quite like it.

Cover Summary: Whether a US or UK cover – both are legitimate for an original UK Plum copy – they are equally prone to wear and few ever avoid it. To find an imported US cover devoid of any bashing, rubbing, ringwear or creasing is little short of remarkable. I can only tip-my-hat to the one-and-only original owner who cherished his collection. This superb example almost sets the standard and most-all collectors will treasure it.

The Inner Sleeves: AROUND EXCELLENT: not too easy to grade as one had shed it’s polylining. It has been replaced by one of those top quality Japanese ultra soft anti-static inners instead. These are nigh-on mirror-image Polydor style inners, only the date codes vary, one being 0471 and the other 0571 – this not unusual, both have the less-seen black ink rather than the more common blue. These have hardly any creasing and both sets of window circles are neat and almost as made. Some darkening of the adhesive on the edges, on in particular, but all seams unsplit with no repairs. .

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-), and dare I say they are worthy of full Mint? - Well it sure is close, I can hardly imagine finding this double set better as an original again (can I?) All four surfaces are ultra clean, shiny and solidly pressed, any surface traces hardly even register, even with scrutiny under light. The indicators point to a barely handled or played set which is reitterated by stunning sound quality. With just a few small exceptions, the original owner played his records sparingly and my hunch is, this set was played just once, maybe twice only. Any marks are almost conspicuous by their absence and truly both discs remind of new.

Album Played For Grading: Yes, and WOW!! [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This phenomenal set plays up too and, if even possible, above it’s supreme visual grading with nothing to fault. I feel confident enough to say, all fours sides play to absolute perfection with nothing unwanted. Strong, totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear and no pops or clicks were noted. Beautifully pressed with no surface sounds, this set is a class act – as were the band themselves. This guitar festival is stunning, a phenominal recording, well produced too, not all early 70s live albums were; but this is a true exception. Play this as loud as you can and you could almost be at The Fillmore, this legendary venue and concert must have been awe inspiring. Both channels are clean and clear, all frequencies sharp, which is vitally important for those loud electric guitars which go into overdrive and frenzy on many occasions – this is a blistering album that will send shivers down the spine. I feel certain this set has been hardly been played, two near 40 year old records that are barely even ‘run-in’ in vinyl terms. Clearly well stored and looked after and hardly handled. The one and only previous owner owned a quality separate stereo system so this and like all others in this collection that were purchased new, have never been exposed to damaging worn-out stylus and the difference is plain to see and hear. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this awesome double set, this is pure captivating brilliance of the highest order. This ‘Plum’ pair will prove near impossible to find better and the sound will delight even the most discerning audio purist. This legendary concert and set is unreservedly recommended.

End Piece: One of the definitive live albums ever, with perfect performances from this outstanding, legendary American band. Always highly regarded by critics and always featuring highly in any ‘Best Albums of All Time Lists’ and justifiably so. Side fours ‘Whippin Post’, clocking in at 22.40 has to be one of the most awesome tracks ever put to vinyl, it’s a groundbreaking tour de force and remains one of rock’s most inspired and definitive improvised performances, and there is not a second of filler material on this album. This band made two double classics: this stunning live double and the equally classic Eat a Peach, another double set. Two of the finest albums ever within the genre. With so genuinely few classic rock guitarists around these days, bar the older original guys who survived, sit back and enjoy this guitar-feast of pure brilliance, almost too good for words – Phew!! DO NOT LOSE THIS ONE.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
