Weight of this Record: 132 grams. This an impressive weight for this album, often much thinner and pressing quality is often an issue with this album.

Rarity: Moderate, but complete first issues with a neat and undamaged desk cover, original panties and the plastic shaped inner sleeve are considerably rarer. Also, as mentioned above, pressing quality is a massive factor. So often, there are pressing noises and distortions, usually on ‘My Stars’ on side two, but this copy plays superbly with hardly anything unwanted. This was a joy to play-grade with utmost detail and delivery of this vintage AC classic.

Brief Info: Alice Cooper’s most famous song provided the title for this fifth album that largely broke him into a new UK audience. His first three albums – all issued on Frank Zappa’s Straight label – were all largely ignored, then with a Warner Bros contract, ‘Killer’ slowly began his rise to fame. School’s Out, the single topped the UK charts and more success followed with subsequent albums and singles. Less macabre than then previous ‘Love it to Death’ and ‘Killer’ albums, and follow-up ‘Billion Dollar Babies’, but still quite full-on. I rate this as one of his best and the gimmick desk cover is superb (but fragile). This an A1/B1 first issue and superbly pressed compared to several I have heard before. The cover fully intact and strong with mimimal wear and certainly lacking the usual damage or missing parts most seem to have now. The inclusion of the original plastic inner sleeve and those delicate panties are vitally important and integral parts of the set. Apparently the knickers were withdrawn quite quickly because of their flamability – that could be no real surprise as they are made with paper. They are delicate for sure and finding these intact with elastic with a little flexibility left is very difficult. Only one in many many copies will still include them. So this copy is strong and complete and sounds superb. I regard this as one of my first serious albums I had as a teenager, purchased for my 15th birthday by my grandmother, Alice Cooper became my first ‘favourite’ band at this time – quickly followed by Zappa. This impressive clean, complete example brings those memories flooding back.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated matt cover with the top folded to open up like a school desk. The under side has two lugs that pull out to hold rigid two long ‘legs’ to support the desk. The inside has a picture of the band on the top lid and the bottom things a bad school kid might have hidden away – it’s a great concept and creation – for me, one of the greatest gimmick covers ever. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the original plastic transparent inner sleeve and those elusive, fragile panties as-seen.

Cover Front: The front is superb and very matt, as the first issues were. Later ones had a more glossy finish. There is barely anything of note to fault at all with any hint of creasing near the bottom rounded corners (look extra hard) and no sticker issues.

Cover Back: This where the problems are usually found. With two ultra fragile leg supports and the two legs cut and hinged, these often tear or badly weaken over time. Often actually pulled off entirely or repaired. All parts here are still attached and quite solidly so, especially the legs. A little creasing to the supports but no tears, repairs or damage as seen in my close-up pictures. In terms of surface wear to this back, barely any.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything to fault again, a trace of thickening to the bottom front edge which is rarely avoided as the barest minimum.

Top Edge: This closed edge is the spine with all its text superbly strong and intact. There is hardly wear to this surface which remains unfaded and straight.

Bottom Edges: The back edge is closed to hold the record inside the ‘desk’, little to fault on this at all again. The single thickness front which acts as the desk lid, has thickened on its very edge seen viewed end-on. This being slightly proud of the back so it can be opened more easily, means this handling edge will rarely escape this to some degree. However, there is scant evidence of this from full-on viewing of the main surfaces and is only relatively mild anyway.The record enters the desk via this fully open edge.

Left and Right Edges: Constructed as per the bottom edge, with closed backs and thin card front, there is a little mild patchy thickening only. For a cover now 46-years-old, I think these fragile areas have fared generally well overall.

Corners: The top pair which are normal and square, have little wear at all and remain crisp, neat with minimal tip rubbing. The bottom ones are rounded, hence more delicate, but again have little wear, traces of light thickening become quite critical, none have suffered any major knocks.

Cover Summary: A classic gimmick and ‘working’ cover to create a vintage open top school desk. Overall, a very strong all-round example, and these are very delicate and remaining fully intact, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive and still quite solid item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this so often missing and replaced by a standard inner. A plastic transparent inner with a straight top entrance edge and rounded below. It has the least crinkle I have seen for years and all edges intact with no evidence of weakening or hard ugly creases. Still quite fresh and lacking the usual dulling or ageing most have (if even included at all).

The Panties: NEAR EXCELLENT: actually hard to grade an item like this really. Firstly, UK ones were white, US ones were yellow. These still quite clean with any ageing of the fragile paper light. Most will darken over time, the elastic top losing all stretch, these still have a little which is more unusual. No tears or damage, but creasing near impossible to avoid, so some misshaping is inevitable. Given the age and simply what they are – and these are guaranteed original – these have withstood age well. These will supplied around the record as seen in the picture, just how they were when first issued. This I know for a fact as I owned one from brand new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed with greater weight than most I have held. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces very light,wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or pressing issues – never take this for granted – I have several copies of this album with horrible distortion and rasps purely in the pressing. This copy does NOT have them. Few available copies will outperform this first UK pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
