ALEXANDER 'SKIP' SPENCE: Oar (Columbia CS 9831, stereo)

• Condition : Cover is EX, just shy of NM, faintest wear from storage, timing strip lower front cover. Vinyl is NM, has -1A/-1A matrix endings in dead wax, no spindle trails, may well be unplayed! Includes the Columbia Records innersleeve as issued.
• Description : Rare 1969 original on '360 Sound' labels. You may have seen the unusually high price another copy of this LP realized at auction a few days ago. This suggests the supply of these has dried up for good after 40 years! This LP was long rumored to be Columbia's poorest selling 1960s rock title, having only sold a few hundred copies back in 1969 and then being very quickly deleted. Music is basically Spence's acid-fried take on prewar country blues mixed with spacey psychedelia. Spence somehow got a one-album solo deal from Columbia and the LP was recorded quickly at Columbia's Nashville studios following Skippy's cross-country motorcycle ride from SF, where Spence had returned after being kicked out of Moby Grape and / or being briefly locked up in Bellvue in NYC in late 1968 after supposedly threatening Don Stevenson with a fire ax. (Moby Grape had been ensconced in a Manhattan hotel, with fire axes aplenty I'm sure, for recording sessions at Columbia's NYC studios). Record-collector hyperbole aside, this LP was never easy to find, and this is the best spare I've had in several years. I don't think this will fetch as much as the last copy but you guys are welcome to try:) Reserve is $100.

• Records are shipped in a cardboard record mailer with sufficient padding, and the disc is removed from the jacket to prevent seamsplits.
