Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A little above average for it’s era.

Rarity: Rare: another poor selling album on the most collectable of labels. Most copies of this that show are on the later formats and this Swirl is getting increasingly hard to find.

Brief Info: The first ‘Sensational Alex Harvey Band’ album and when first issued on the Vertigo Spiral label, it went almost unnoticed. Only after they found some success later was there a little interest in this early album. By then the Swirl format had disappeared and replaced by the Spaceship format. A very fine album this is too featuring the much missed slightly eccentric vocals of Harvey. Varied material and highly entertaining. This is a very solid example: the cover is never easy and this has a few blemishes and minor wear. The record has a few marks but mostly superficial and with few sounds emitted. So not perfect but still a very nice copy and with so few around, this could be just what the Vertigo collector is looking for. In terms of Swirl rarity this is somewhere in the middle, on my 11 years or so on Ebay, this is my very first.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. The front has a die-cut diamond shaped window that shows Harvey in a barred cell. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: The front is very impressive with little to fault. In terms of rubbing or creasing it has little. A few light friction surface marks are seen under light but hardly visible with normal viewing. One tiny blemish to the die cut window being a small nick-crease on the centre of the right vertical edge, that apart, crisp and neat with no burring. This front is single thickness card, hence vulnerable to just about all forms of wear and damage. So finding it with little to fault is without doubt quite unusual.

Cover Back: Quite similar to the front with fine and light surface marks seen under light. Any rim impression is equally light with no penetrating ringwear or ink erosion. The main graphic is totally unworn and overall both sides are clean and still with high degree of freshness. A little corner tip rubbing will rarely be avoided.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This is impressively clean and as the record is stored via this centrefold, it shows minimal traces of any wear or issues around the delicate spine fold area. A small nick split at the very top and a tad more on the bottom, this will rarely be avoided and here almost as light as it gets. The tiny nick on the die cut window front is hardly even noticeable. The left white side shows hardly any set-off from the opposite dark face and this centrefold sets a high standard overall.

Top Edges: Both neat with little wear. Any thickening or burring is very slight and mild indeed.

Bottom Edges: Some light patchy rubbing on the thicker back, the single thickness front similar to the top.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The delicate front edge is clean, sharp with little wear, also devoid of thickening or burring. The close back edge is crisp and straight with barely few traces of any rubbing.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression but slight tilt to left. That not a bad thing as it has protected the right front edge. Folded square, so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. There is fairly light patchy rubbing to the top fold hinge but little on the actual spine surface. Which means all text is near perfect with barely any wear and that always a huge bonus on any Vertigo cover that were very rarely laminated – and this one of course never was.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing with fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. A little wear is almost the best to be expected from a cover like this – with so many Swirl covers confined to bargain bins with huge ‘Sale’ stickers applied resulting in huge tears and damage, this has survived relatively unscathed in that type of respect. Not for the perfectionist, but many collectors will treasure this one – not seen or offered often, this is a very fine cover.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: little to fault in terms of real wear or damage of which there is barely any. This has simply aged like most with darkening of the seam adhesive which is moderate. Hardly any creasing, just some record impression and all edges unsplit with no repairs. The lining intact and neat as seen through two crisp and undamaged window circles.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(-): a fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy played a few times even if the labels possibly suggest little. One small mark on ‘Midnight Moses’ with a three or four very faint ticks – this also on a very loud passage so hardly even notices. Most all of any other marks are surface and superficial with ultra fine and faint whispy marks seen under bright angled light. Visually still a pleasing record that should please many collectors but the visual purists or the highly discerning.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Vertigo record plays mainly above, and probably most well above it’s visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are gentle, light and infrequent. Any clicks few and light with few others than mentioned above on the very small mark feelable mark on side one. An album with some quiet passages and a little light surface sound is very difficult to avoid totally. Even on my very revealing turntable, very little spoilt my pleasure in hearing this album on vinyl for the first time for many years – my last time via a Spaceship pressing. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only modestly and it has survived the years without too much trauma. Nothing of any real note spoilt the audio experience when play-grading this rare Swirl. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended. If absolute visual, audio and cover perfection are mandatory, well one may come along one day, but I cannot hold my breath that long and this splendid mostly blemished example could represent excellent value for money.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
