This lo-fi songwriter has emerged from Philadelphia to make an impressive seven albums in only five years, yet 'Beach Music' appears to be the point whereby his unusual and beguiling skills make a lurch for the mainstream, and it's not hard to see why. The otherworldly, melancholic dreamstates of this album are always buoyed as much by infectious melody as by off-kilter experimentation, summoning a strangely engaging landscape in which the pixie-ish songwriting of Devendra Banhart , the off-kilter stylistics of Pavement and the soundscapes of Talk Talk can co-exist. A record of understated slacker charm and rare magic.
