King cranked out this solid, if typical, album for the Stax label after the success of Born Under a Bad Sign. With Booker T. drummer Al Jackson producing, the set includes such staples as "You Threw Your Love on Me Too Strong," "Wrapped up in Love Again," and a powerful version of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor." For fans of King's guitar work, the inclusion of the instrumental workouts on "You Don't Love Me" and "Drowning on Dry Land" are a special bonus. Not an essential Albert King album, but one of his good ones.

Big Albert's first true Stax album ("Born Under a Bad Sign," after all, was mostly a singles compilation) delivers the goods in terms of King's happy marriage between blues and Southern soul. The singular guitar tone and King's alternately muscular and lyrical bends and lines mate even more acutely to the Stax sound here. Some of the material isn't quite up to King's standard, but the material that is is as essential for King fans in particular and blues fans in general as anything in his book. And he seems to be trying to become the king of the answer song, while he's at it, with the indirect "Laundromat Blues" answer "If the Washing Don't Get You, The Rinsing Will" and the more overt "You Threw Your Love on Me Too Strong." The covers of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and Elmore James's "The Sky is Crying" are remarkable for King's ability to dig into their core and come up with something entirely his own. Coming on the heels of his triumphs meeting the rock audiences at the Fillmore Auditorium (captured first on "Live Wire/Blues Power" prior to this release), King's at the top of his game and still feeling the love.
