Downbeat Magazine awarded "Cohn on the Saxophone" five stars when it appeared on the Dawn label back in 1956, when inventively-played, heart-felt music counted as much as innovation and novelty. The album should be one of the genuine treasures in any collection of LPs, cassettes, and CD's. Cohn may have become more aggressive and adventurous in his later years, sporting a harder tone, but he was never more "at home" with his horn or his musical persona than on this set. From the opening bars of "We Three"--as unforced and unaffected a performance as I've heard committed to record--to the soul-satisfying closure of "When Day Is Done" he's the plain-talking raconteur, a compelling story-teller precociously wise beyond his relatively young years at the time.

At one point in the fifties Cohn was practically revered as a master storyteller (listen to his climactic and definitive solo as featured instrumentalist on Manny Albam's ambitious "The Blues Is Everybody's Business"), someone who could be counted on to weigh in with only the most essential, vital musical words, no more, no less. Zoot was always the happy swinging dancer; Al the equally swinging but more coherent and purposeful narrative craftsman. I never felt that he performed "on" the saxophone or, for that matter, that he "played" saxophone. The horn was his voice: "The Saxophone IN Al Cohn" would have been my title for this session, made all the more satisfying by Al's sympathetic, genial company--Hank Jones, Milt Hinton, Osie Johnson and, on a couple of engaging up-tempo tunes, trombonist and musical soul mate, Frank Rehak.

There are no big surprises, no tricks, no cutting-edge revelations destined to be dulled and blunted by later developments. This is indeed timeless and inexhaustible music. If it fits like a comfortable old shoe, it's of the highest quality leather--made to last.

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions  ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.  (minor scuffs noted on "Good Old Blues"; not expected to affect playing)

(b)          The record is  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)            The album comes with its original, 'rice paper' inner sleeve (typically used in the 50’s and very early 60’s) which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years! We believe that, despite great technological progress, these early 'rice paper' inner sleeves provided a degree of protection MUCH HIGHER than any other material used ever since.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has some light yellowish stains along the opening side  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) , probably from exposure to humidity. (nothing significant; less than 2 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No wrinkles or creases

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
