Ginger Johnson formed the African Messengers in the early '60s and became a favourite on the Swinging London club scene, popular with the hippest mods. He later became associated with the underground, performing at the UFO club and other 'happenings' around the time of the release of 'African Party'.
In 1969, Ginger and his drummers appeared on stage with the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park, stealing the show during a ritualistic 'Sympathy For The Devil'
'African Party' was recorded at London's legendary Sound Techniques studio in March 1967 by respected sound engineer John Wood, well known for his work with Fairport Convention and Richard Thompson among others.
The album features thunderous drumming overlaid with polyrhythmic percussion, great melodies, chants, interlaced with guitar, flute and a killer jazz horn section.
Standing strong to the test of 38 years, it's a highly infectious gem of an album; you'd need to have feet of stone to fail to get moving to this one!
