Another album that needs very little introduction. This particular first pressing is a stunning example of its kind and has no interference on either side. The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio can only be described 'as new' and with only minimal spindle wear it has not been overplayed. It has also been so carefully looked after over the last 52 years and has a pristine visual 'look'. This is a FINAL UPGRADE pressing of that I have no doubt - there is not even a single tick let alone anything more. I cannot emphasise enough just how STUNNING the sonic quality is, audio does not get any better than this! Apart from the clarity it really is the depth and resonance of the sound that really stand out and this is exactly why the Vertigo first pressings are so collectable. This sonic quality cannot be replicated by any other medium. What an album!
The gatefold is in fantastic condition with barely any wear and it's clear it has hardly been handled down the years. The original swirl inner is also super clean with very little wear.

Visual description
The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen despite being over 52 years old. It has been preserved incredibly well and there are no marks or scratches to be seen. There is just one hairline mark on S1 that is a little more obvious but it is faint and has NO impact on the 'as new' audio plus a few other very faint sleeve removal hairlines that you can only see under a strong unforgiving light. The Vertigo labels have no marking/writing and only minimal spindle wear. This is one stunning vinyl!
Play grading
The intro on 'I Am And So Are You' plays with remarkable clarity and depth and Hoyle's opening vocal is equally as strong. It continues in the same exact way with no intrusion on the audio not even a single dust tick. It basically plays 'as new' and that is no exaggeration. The fade out has no 'background' either that is a measure of the clarity on offer here - this is a Mint start to this classic album.
The seven minutes of 'Night Flight' is of the same standard with zero 'background'. Every note is crystal clear and the mid instrumental is superb! It plays with incredible power and definition and the brief silent section that follows is exactly that - totally silent. Hoyle's vocal throughout could not be any more impressive and the progressive end section is just phenomenal. I cannot overstate just how unbelievably good the audio has been so far and you would be mistaken for thinking this record was brand new! This is another Mint track no need for a minus here.
The intro on 'I Wonder If I Care As Much' plays to perfection and this high end quality is maintained throughout. A hint of barely noticeable vocal distortion perhaps? Just maybe but totally non-intrusive and this is without doubt a stunning version. There are no dust ticks, ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static either. Pure listening enjoyment! Mint- is very much deserved and arguably I am being a little harsh with that grading it is a fantastic version. The warmth and depth of the audio is out of this world!
'Mr. Joy' plays with STUNNING precision from the first note to the last. A number of quieter sections and yet there is no 'background' and I mean not even one solitary dust tick. This is an album that has clearly been so well preserved over the years and that is reflected in the amazing sonic quality on offer here. A Mint version all the way.

The intro on 'Three Sisters' is flawless and Hoyle's first vocal is also 'as new' with no interference. It progresses in the same way and the mid instrumental is superb and especially Jopp's work. No need to elaborate this is Mint from the first note to the last.
The super quiet intro on 'Cocoanut Grove' plays beautifully with not one dust tick and continues in the same manner with, you guessed it, no interference. Hoyle's vocal is so clean and 'fresh' sounding and this is unequivocally another Mint track.
The epic 'All Along The Watchtower' plays with amazing sonic quality and as always I have played every second so as to provide a 'complete' grade. You just have to sit back and admire the quality of the audio and having played every track it is obvious this vinyl has hardly ever been on a turntable before. The clarity, depth and warmth of the music is second to none and there are just no negatives. Each vocal and instrumental section can accurately be described 'as new' - not bad for a 11 minute track! The high octane passages towards the end have no inner groove distortion and this is a MINT finish to a simply stunning album.
In summary this highly regarded and very collectable first pressing on Vertigo could not play any better, the sonic quality across both sides is phenomenal and 'as new' describes the entire album. This album was not pressed in vast numbers and this version certainly belongs at the top of the tree! The clarity, depth, power and warmth of the audio is exceptional and it is easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE album, a time warp classic you could say. It has the wow factor and that also applies to the cover and the Vertigo inner. STUNNING!
The Gatefold & Vertigo Swirl Inner
The Keef designed cover is in lovely condition and has hardly been handled as it has retained its original shape and structure so well and is so clean also. The edges have no marking/rubbing and the wide spine is in perfect shape with no wear on the corners. The other corners have only minimal rubbing and I do mean very minimal! The opening edge is close to perfect with only a couple of very minor crimps. The front cover is 'as new' with no marking or creasing and the back cover is so impressive also with just one very small rub bottom left. The inside of the gatefold is again so clean with just 3/4 minor 'spots' and one tiny corner crease and for once the inner spine is undamaged which is a rarity. A stunning first press cover in every regard.
The original poly-lined swirl inner is in great condition and is so clean probably due to the fact that it has hardly ever been removed from the cover! It has just one faint mark on one side but no spotting or fading around the edges. There are no side splits or tears and only minimal creasing. As can be seen it has the date code 0470 printed in one corner.
Play tested on my Rega P2 Turntable / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers
This record has been professionally cleaned on a Pro-Ject VC-S machine
