"Released by CBS/Columbia (A3S-187) in 1975, for promotional purposes only, Pure Gold From Rock 'N' Roll's Golden Boys is a box set that was issued to radio stations throughout the states. The beautiful gold foil box, with black graphics (wings logo and the title), includes a promo LP of each of Aerosmith's first three studio releases (the group's raw self-titled debut album, Get Your Wings and Toys in the Attic).  

"In 1970, the first incarnation of Aerosmith formed when vocalist Steven Tyler met guitarist Joe Perry while working at a Sunapee, NH, ice-cream parlor. Tyler, who originally was a drummer, and Perry decided to form a power trio with bassist Tom Hamilton. The group soon expanded to a quartet, adding a second guitarist called Ray Tabano; he was quickly replaced by Brad Whitford, a former member of Earth Inc. With the addition of drummer Joey Kramer, Tyler became the full-time lead singer by the end of year. Aerosmith relocated to Boston at the end of 1970. After playing clubs in the Massachusetts and New York areas for two years, the group landed a record contract withColumbia Records in 1972."

"In retrospect, it's a bit shocking how fully formed the signature Aerosmith sound was on their self-titled 1973 debut — which may not be the same thing as best-executed, because this album still sounds like a first album, complete with the typical stumbles and haziness that comes with a debut. Despite all this, Aerosmith clearly showcases all the attributes of the band that would become the defining American hard rock band of the '70s. Here, the Stones influences are readily apparent, from the Jagger-esque phrasing of Steven Tyler to the group's high-octane boogie, but the group displays little of the Stones' deep love of blues here. Instead, Aerosmith is bloozy — their riffs don't swing, they slide. They borrow liberally from Led Zeppelin's hybridization of Chess and Sun riffs without ever sounding much like Zep. They are never as British as Zeppelin — they lack the delicate folky preciousness, they lack the obsession with blues authenticity, they lack the larger-than-life persona of so many Brit bands. They are truly an American band, sounding as though they were the best bar band in your local town, cranking out nasty hard-edged rock, best heard on "Mama Kin," the best rocker here, one that's so greasy it nearly slips through their fingers. But the early masterpiece is, of course, "Dream On," the first full-fledged power ballad. There was nothing quite like it in 1973, and it remains the blueprint for all power ballads since. The rest of the record contains the seeds of Aerosmith's sleazoid blues-rock, but they wouldn't quite perfect that sound until the next time around."

"Often overshadowed by the subsequent twin highlights of Toys in the Attic and Rocks, Aerosmith's 1974 second album, Get Your Wings, is where Aerosmith became Aerosmith — it's where they teamed up with producer Jack Douglas, it's where they shed much of their influences and developed their own trademark sound, it's where they turned into songwriters, it's where Steven Tyler unveiled his signature obsessions with sex and sleaze. Chief among these attributes may be Douglas, who either helped the band ease into the studio or captured their sound in a way their debut never did. This is a leaner, harder album, bathed in grease and layered in grit, but it's not just down to Douglas. The band itself sounds more distinctive. There are blues in Joe Perry and Joey Kramer's interplay, but this leapfrogs over blues-rock; it turns into slippery hard rock. To be sure, it's still easy to hear the Stones here, but they never really sound Stonesy; there's almost more of the Yardbirds to the way the group works the riffs, particularly evident on the cover of the early 'Birds classic "The Train Kept a Rollin'." But if the Yardbirds were tight and nervy, Aerosmith is blown out and loose, the sound of excess incarnate — that is, in every way but the writing itself, which is confident and strong, fueled by Tyler's gonzo sex drive. He is the "Lord of the Thighs," playing that "Same Old Song and Dance," but he also slows down enough for the eerie "Seasons of Wither," a powerful slow-churning ballad whose mastery of atmosphere is a good indication of how far the band has grown. They never attempted anything quite so creepy on their debut, but it isn't just that Aerosmith is trying newer things on Get Your Wings, it's that they're doing their bloozy bluster better and bolder, which is what turns this sophomore effort into their first classic."

The success of the album derives from a combination of an increased sense of songwriting skills and purpose. Not only does Joe Perry turn out indelible riffs like "Walk This Way," "Toys in the Attic," and "Sweet Emotion," but Steven Tyler has fully embraced sleaziness as his artistic muse. Taking his cue from the old dirty blues "Big Ten Inch Record," Tyler writes with a gleeful impishness about sex throughout Toys in the Attic, whether it's the teenage heavy petting of "Walk This Way," the promiscuous "Sweet Emotion," or the double-entendres of "Uncle Salty" and "Adam's Apple." WoaH! Here is one box set that you may NEVER again see on Ebay! As I write this, Mine is the ONLY one on all of Ebay. Put your Rockin' Shoes on before you listen to this one! I've visually graded it NM Near Mint for the 3 vinyl discs, and they look like they have hardly EVER been played! The 3 covers are all NM Near Mint with no bar codes. Each one has "DEMONSTRATION Not For Sale" stamped in gold on the back. The gold-painted box is VG++ and some of the color has rubbed off over the years, but it is intact, sold and sturdy with no splits. There is some writing in bvery light ink on one edge of the box. There is no bar code on this one. So here is something you may already know: If you want to fly, first to must Get Your Wings, then get some Aerosmith!! Rock On!

This LP Record Set was cleaned using the

VPI HW-16.5 VACUUM TUBE CLEANER!

The HW-16.5 is the standard in record cleaning machines, neither its build quality nor its cleaning power has ever been surpassed! Its high-torque, 18 RPM turntable motor is capable of standing the pressure of heavy scrubbing during long cleaning sessions, and its 35-second cleaning cycle makes quick work out of even the dirtiest records! The improved 16.5 model has the new self-aligning vacuum suction tube for even more accurate cleaning! I now clean all of my records that are NOT Factory Sealed with the VPI, then test listen to the vinyl, then clean the record again with the VPI. This baby costs me hundreds of dollars, but My Customers Deserve THE BEST!!!

GRADING SCALE

I use a Universal Grading System to describe the quality of the LP albums and 45 singles that I sell. I grade records under strong, diffused room light or discreet sunlight. I do not use stock photos for my ads; all of my scans are of the Item You See! You get no surprises from me!

NOTE: Please keep in mind that when I describe any LP, I am referring to its Original Year Of Release, NOT the year that the LP was printed! In many cases, the year that a given LP was printed is unknown. When in doubt, PLEASE ASK me! Thank You!

 All of my LP’s are stored upright in a SMOKE-FREE ENVIRONMENT! 

• SS Mint (M): Album is New, Still Sealed and has never been played.
• Mint (M): The vinyl has no noticeable scratches, fingerprints or defects and looks like it has never been played, although there may be use at the spindle hole. The cover has no noticeable wear or defects. There may be very slight curling of the right side corners of the cover due to shrink wrap pressure. May still have it’s original shrink wrap. MINT does not mean "perfect".
• Near Mint (NM): Almost Mint vinyl with perhaps a few visual imperfections that should not affect the sound of the record. Perhaps a small amount of static can be heard on a few areas. Cover is nice looking with little or no ring wear and may still have its original shrink wrap.
• VG++: Vinyl has some signs of wear; very clean, only light surface marks, scuffs or scratches which will not distract significantly from the sound, some audible static, some snaps or pops but no stalls or skips unless listed. Cover may have some signs of wear, perhaps some ringwear but is still in nice collectible condition, solid with no cuts,holes or splits unless listed, may have edge repairs.
• VG+: Played often with moderate surface wear, marks, scuffs or scratches, and some moderate noise, static, pops or skips - still plays well with increased areas of pops and static. Cover may have significant overall wear and ring wear, repaired edges or spine, may have cuts/holes/cut corners.
• VG: Overall wear, more noisy sound during quiet passages, a lot of static and many skips that require lifting the needle. Cover is well worn, usually with considerable ring wear. may have cuts, holes, cut corners. May have taped edges. The lowest grade.

In my opinion, the grade of “Mint” and the word “Mint” does not equal Perfection. The grade of Perfection does not exist, as far as I know. Different phono cartridges and stereo setups, condition of the needle and if the record is cleaned before playing (or not cleaned) affects the way a vinyl record sounds. You can look at a record with the naked eye and not see micro imperfections which might affect the music and the sound. There are just too many variables. I listen to records after cleaning them. If I do not hear skips or pops or snaps and I do not see noticeable scratches, then as far as I am concerned, that record is Mint. Be very careful not to compare my grading standards with those of others. I do not use Goldmine and to compare my grades to Goldmine is not really fair. Remember, it's always best to ask questions BEFORE bidding!
