Adele Sebastian was an Afro American jazz flutist and singer, active from the early 70s (when she was still a teenager) until her untimely death at the age of 27 (!) in 1983 from a kidney failure. In fact she had been depending on monthly dialysis to stay alive for years. She lived through and for the music and you can hear it on her only solo album “Desert Fairy Princess” which was first issued in 1981. The mostly acoustic instrumentation brings a very natural and therefore rather retrospective sound considering the year the album was recorded. Adele and her band pull it off right from the start as if it had been 1966 and it was time for a revolution to shake the dust from the old time jazz. In a perfect way she mixes classic American vocal jazz elements with playful and more free passages, Latin music and tribal African sounds in the lengthy and quite rhythm oriented “Man From Tanganyika” and makes the title track start with a mystical “Allahu akbar“ chant while it turns more and more into a dark and gloomy song with something like a psychedelic edge reminiscent of Pharoah Sanders on his early works. Wild rhythms from drums, percussions with tons of bells and chimes weave a thick groove carpet and conjure a magical atmosphere. Those jazz aficionados who love the mid 60s John Coltrane, his sidekick Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane will go crazy for this album.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (nothing significant)

-        Front cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker, sloppily masked (camouflaged) with the blue marker

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has all four corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)

In late 1977, Arthur Doyle brought his quintet to New York to play at the Brook, a loft space on West 17th Street managed by Charles Tyler, with whom Doyle formed the label Dra that same year. The saxophonist/flutist/vocalist was joined by old friends from his hometown of Birmingham, AL, Charles Stephens on trombone and Rashied Sinan on drums (whose only other memorable appearance was on Frank Lowe's 1973 ESP album Black Beings). Sinan turned up with a student of his, Bruce Moore, "to give it more rhythmic feel," and Richard Williams was brought in on Fender Bass to take on both drummers. From the opening splendidly titled "November 8th or 9th -- I Can't Remember When," Alabama Feeling pounds the listener into the ground with thrilling energy, playing easily on a par with classic albums on labels such as ESP and BYG Actuel. Doyle released this recording of the concert, whose dreadful sound quality was perfectly in keeping with the prevailing no wave ethos of the period (Doyle was, incidentally, one of the first jazz musicians to play Max's Kansas City in 1978, with Rudolph Grey and Beaver Harris as the Blue Humans), on Dra in an edition of 1,000, and the first CD reissue 20 years later in 1998 (also limited to 1,000 copies) was transferred by Glenn Branca's house percussionist, Wharton Tiers, direct from vinyl, complete with surface noise and dodgy editing. Connoisseurs of Sun Ra (with whom Arthur Doyle also played but, alas, never recorded) have long been prepared to forego quality sound in the name of great music, and any listener prepared to do the same will not be disappointed. It's worth it for Doyle's snarling entry on "Ancestor" alone.

Arthur Doyle was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1944. He was inspired to play the saxophone as child, after watching Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington play music on television. He received a degree in Music Education from Tennessee State University. His first professional performance was with trumpeter Walter Miller, a Sun Ra alumnus. He often performed with Gladys Knight & the Pips, among others, in the R&B genre as well as in jazz. Although he performed primarily in Nashville early on in his career, he did go on tours that took him as far as Detroit. Doyle was not initially interested in free jazz, but after a performing for a Black Panthers festival he gradually gravitated toward free jazz, and sometimes appeared in concert with Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra. Arthur Doyle's first recorded appearance was on Noah Howard's album The Black Ark. He would later appear on Milford Grave's album Babi Music, and Alan Silva's Desert Music, as well as performances with The Blue Humans. His first recording session as a leader was on Alabama Feeling, released in 1978. He appeared on a number of recordings in the 1990s and throughout the first decade of the 2000s as a leader, solo artist, or sideman. His last performance was recorded in 2013 and released on DVD.

Thurston Moore was a fan of Arthur Doyle, and spoke highly of Doyle's first album as a leader (Alabama Feeling) when he published his list of important free jazz albums.[3] Arthur Doyle's name appeared on a Sonic Youth song, "Kim Gordon and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream" (originally titled "Mariah Carey and the Arthur Doyle Hand Cream") from their album Sonic Nurse. According to Thurston Moore, the song: "... juxtaposes the two extremes of Sonic Youth's eclectic mix of influences. "We could, on the one hand, be interested in a popular figure as ubiquitous as Mariah and on the other hand, we're obviously interested in people [like free-jazz saxophonist Arthur Doyle] that are working on the fringes of the musical world. We operate much more on the fringes and with people from that world as our peers than we do in the world of the big-time music business. Our peers are mostly people from the underground".
