Ryan Adams isn't short on ideas. With over 30 so albums released to-date, Self Portrait arrives off the back of a fruitful few years of serially releasing music. Favouring indulgence over brevity the 24-strong tracklist is a combination of his own new material and nicely chosen covers. It takes a master to reinterpret a masterpiece and Adams doesn't disappoint with his reverb-y, acoustic-y covers of 'Blue Monday' by New Order and R.E.M's 'Shiny Happy People'. His voice lends itself so beautifully and he delivers the words with such conviction. It's great to hear the singer veer away from the familiar on the opener 'Virginia In The Rain'. It has a smooth, soulful touch with a soaring falsetto and indicates Adams' plumbing of the depths of musical history knows no bounds.
