Factory SEALED from 2014! 2-LP set! Don't miss your chance at getting this truly mint copy!Drummer Manu Katche blossomed as a contemporary jazz drummer and band leader, emerging in the mid-2000s after having played with his share of popular musicians. Born in Saint Maur Des Fossés, France on October 27, 1958, he studied classical piano at age seven in Paris, and at age 15 enrolled at the Conservatorie Nationale de Paris. He then became a session and concert drummer with a wide range of groups, but in the mid-'80s, Katche's stock rose considerably, thanks to his involvement with the touring and recording projects of Peter Gabriel and Sting.
A French debut CD, It's About Time, was followed by a string of engagements as a backup musician. The impressive roster of artists he has played with include Joni Mitchell, Gloria Estefan, Johnny Hallyday, Michael McDonald, Simple Minds, Afro Celt Sound System, Jeff Beck, Al DiMeola, Tears for Fears, Dire Straits, Jan Garbarek, Loreena McKennitt, and Youssou N'Dour. He has also performed on several film soundtracks, including Quand Les Etoiles, Le Demenagement, Mookies, Zone Franche, The Professional, and For the Love of the Game.
After issuing a demo for the Zildjian cymbal company in 1999, he joined the ECM stable of artists., releasing his breakout recording Neighbourhood, with help from labelmates Jan Garbarek, Tomasz Stanko, and Stanko bandmembers Marcin Wasilewski and Slawomir Kurkiewicz. From 2003 to 2007, Katche, producer Dove Attia, composer André Manoukian, and singer Marianne James comprised the judges panel for Nouvelle Star, the French Television version of American Idol. He also found work hosting the monthly program One Shot Not. During this period, he also worked with popular Croatian singer Gibonni on his albums Mirakul (2001) and Unca Fibre (2006).
Katche's ECM follow-up, Playground, came out in 2007 with assistance from saxophonist Trygve Seim and trumpeter Mathias Eick. He then returned with 2010's Third Round, followed by a self-titled album, both on ECM. Katche rounded out his time at ECM with the anthology Touchstone for Manu, after which he moved to Anteprima for 2016's Unstatic. - Michael G. Nastos
Manu Katché has left ECM after four records, and his new album, Live in Concert, showcases a slightly more aggressive side of the drummer, who is a Frenchman with African roots. The disc, recorded at the New Morning jazz club in Paris, contains nine songs, all drawn from his previous three albums and all a buoyant celebration of life. Rock listeners know Katché from his work with Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tears for Fears and others, and a pop sensibility definitely infiltrates his work. But though his own compositions rock more than swing, his group’s performance revolves around a profound dedication to improvisation and dynamic interplay.
The cast features Luca Aquino on trumpet, Tore Brunborg on saxophones and synth bass and Jim Watson on piano and Hammond B3 organ. The evening begins with four thoughtful but happy pieces with lovely melodies. Look at the titles and you’ll get the idea: “Pieces of Emotion,” “Shine and Blue,” “Song for Her” and “Loving You.” The centerpiece of the album, a 10-minute version of “Clubbing,” finds Katché grooving deeper than ever, pounding hard and changing the rhythmic pattern by the bar, almost to the point where he goes full Muppet Show Animal over Watson’s supercharged, swelling organ. “Beats and Bounce” is equally volatile, with thick and funky bass, two-fisted piano and drums bashed to oblivion. At the end of “Snapshot,” Katché has the audience vocalizing along with the music; when the music stops they keep singing the five-note chant, and presumably they continued to do so as they emptied out into the streets of Paris. It isn’t difficult to see why. - JazzTimes
Both as a live and studio musician, Manu Katché is regarded one of the greatest drummers of our time. Has worked with pop greats such as Peter Gabriel, Sting, and Dire Straits, as well as great improvisers such as Jan Garbarek, Jeff Beck, and Pino Palladino. Katchè's work as a composer and bandleader is an integral part of his career. He has released seven internationally acclaimed and hugely successful albums as a leader. This the first live recording of Katché's own music, featuring his long-running quartet with Jim Watson (organ and piano), Luca Aquino (trumpet), and Tore Brunborg (saxophone). Vinyl includes a bonus track not found on the CD.
