‘ACROSS THE WATER’, A RARE AND 100% GENUINE 1975 UK JOHN HASSELL RECORD LABEL 12” DOUBLE SIDED ACETATE CATALOGUE NUMBER, MCW 001.
The John Hassell Recordings studio was based in a residential house in a quiet street in Nassau Road, London SW13. It’s output was to feed British Reggae Sound Systems throughout the country. Olympic Studios was just round the corner in Church Road. So while Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Eagles were working in one street, John Hassell was working with a different clientele in the next. He was a jobbing recording and mastering engineer who had a small label of mainly middle of the road artists. The John Hassell record label isn't seen often: doubtless John Hassell records were pressed in small quantities, as is usual for such concerns.
This is a one off example of a John Hassell Recordings on a 12” double sided Acetate. And was recorded at Effingham Studios Surrey England between March and April 1975, and was produced and written by Peter McKerrow.
Across The Water was Peter McKerrow’s first serious composition at age 16. Written in three Movements as a response to a visit to St Kilda – 35 miles west of the Outer Hebrides – a place of stark beauty, inhabited until 1930, and now sanctuary for very large colonies of gannets, puffins, fulmars and petrels.
Both Acetate labels are in Excellent condition, clean labels with signs of a few plays.
The Acetate plays through all 8 tracks without major faults, and has a very nice Folk/Prog sounding content. All that can be heard is light background crackle, this is common on Acetates. (Please note) the Acetate does not sit 100% flat on the turntable, nevertheless it play’s very well. The scan below shows that the Acetate is not completely flat.
Both sides of the Acetate are in Excellent condition, clean glossy undamaged surfaces, with a few light surface hairlines visible.
The Acetate is housed in it’s original mock up glossy Picture Sleeve which is in Very Good condition. This sleeve shows wear to the edges and spine.
A superb, rare and obscure example of this collectable Acetate.
