Adveturous UK 1970 progressives, great underground moves led by creative gushing Organ (with wired-up fuzz box effects!) ~ A forgotten gem originally on Deram Nova Records ~ this album stands out by virtue of having no guitars except a bass. The keyboards are working overtime here, and with the inclusion of some trippy electronic effects injected into the 'heady' passages...
A progressive act without a guitar player? That's exactly what this early 70's British foursome is. Originally, they became known mainly because Paul Kossoff and Simon Kirke played in the band before leaving to form legendary band Free. After their departure, Aardvark were mostly a studio act and recorded their only album in 1970. As is to be expected, Aardvark's material is highly keyboard oriented, the brunt of the music being carried by the fuzzed-up Hammond organ which more or less simulates the job of a distorted guitar. (see early Soft Machine in similar Ratledge wired his organ with a fuzz-box) ...The soaring vocals by Skillin are pleasant and the music is quite melodic. The album contains some ear-friendly keys interplay as well as some good R&B guitar riffs and harmonic choruses.
This one off album by Aardvark is one that often flies right by most listeners on the first listening. I know, as I am one that it did. I didn't fully appreciate the wealth of fabulous material here for years after I bought it. But then, one day, in an altered state of mind, it suddenly all became apparent to me. This is truly great early 70s prog very much in the vein of the Nice . . . with some occasional Pink Floyd-like "freak-outs". I am now of the opinion that side 2, track 1: "The Outing - Yes" is one of the most psychedelic tracks ever recorded (and I've heard a few)! So much so, that in the right setting, one can almost get high just by listening to this awesome experience and letting your mind go, surfing on a wave of sound. It starts out rather unexceptionally, as an almost whimsical ditty, supposedly sung by children anticipating an "outing" in the country. But as the song progresses, we find that this is no ordinary outing; not taken physically, but mentally. The band's audio recreation of a mind bending trip is second to none. Other tracks on this album are also equally great, including "Very Nice Of You To Call", and "Copper Sunset".
