This record is for the advanced vintage record collector.
Unlike many Ebay record sellers that only offer you a visual grading, I play each and every record.
I try to give a numeric grading on a scale from 1-10 as to the sound quality of each disc.. Keep in mind that since I am not a record collector and these records nearly 120 years old, my grading may differ from serious collectors but I do take returns if successful buyers are not completely satisfied..

very scarce** TWO SIDED PRE DOG* 7 inch* IMPROVED RECORD
A-490 & A-491
song title on both sides
11/06/1900
RECITED AND SUNG BY HOOLEY & FAMILY
Both the record and the label show well.. No cracks, scratches or needle digs in play surface. Some minor scuffing not affecting play
Record plays very good plus in my view..
Scarce 7" Improved Record # A-490 PLUS A-491, in great condition from the turn of the century dating no later then 1900. This is a rarer double sided record that has very good sound quality and volume. The disc plays through smoothly without any issues on my wood horn Victor D phonograph using a fiber needle in a No. 2 reproducer… Some minor background noise. I'm not a record collector but I would give it an overall rating of 8 out of 10.
Both sides of the record has recitation performances of well known nursery rhymes like BaBa Black Sheep, London Bridges, 3 Blind Mice, Old King Cole,, Bo Peep and others.
A very unique double sided record to entertain children from 120 years ago.
From what I have seen on the internet,, it appears this US label was only produced in 1900 by Eldridge R. Johnson whose parent company was the Consolidated Talking Machine Company of Philadelphia and preceded the Victor Talking Machine Co. Supposedly Eldridge Johnson came up with a superior way in which to reproduce multiple copies of quality records from a single master.
The Improved Gram-O-Phone Record was the first run of records ever to carry a paper label but lasted only a few months. Through a court injunction, Eldridge Johnson was prohibited from using the term Gram-O-Phone on the labels of any of his so-called superior records thus the IMPROVED RECORD , (which is the disc for sale), was the label that remained on his disc but once again only briefly. Once he moved his operation to New Jersey, Eldridge Johnson's Consolidated Talking Machine Company reorganized and became the Victor Talking Machine Co..
This pre victor, pre dog Improved Record was only made for a few months and to actually find one that is double sided is very rare which is why they are so collectable..

I certainly am not a historian when it comes to the evolution or progression of the first records ever produced so please do your own homework as to the information I am trying to provide.
On Nov-01-19 at 04:06:44 PDT, seller added the following information:
Found out that this record was issued with the every early TOY phonograph and perhaps the only double sided 7 inch Improved Label record produced making it extremely rare.
I have also posted a reference from a book in my pictures.
I have also added a copy of a page from Baumbach book LOOK FOR THE DOG.
It states that this is the exact record that was issued with the Victor Toy phonograph made only for a year between 1900 and 1901.
