I remember some hapless soulie reviewing this single in an old fanzine around 1982 (it may have been Blackbeat), and having the audacity to cover it up. Tim Ashibende ripped the poor sod to pieces for reviewing such a well-known 45, and promptly provided the real titles. That was nearly thirty years ago, and I bet there are now quite a few out there to whom Eddie Miller is an unknown entity. Back in the Torch days, both sides saw deck action - in fact I put the two titles on my first ever Northern cassette tape, way back in 1973, when I was lucky enough to borrow a box of Northern Soul singles from a school pal, Phil Morris.

The Verve session index has the two tracks as being recorded in a New York studio, with a question mark after the date of 15th February 1967. The numbers immediately before are also total dynamite: VK 10492 is The King Davis House Rockers with "Baby You Satisfy Me", and VK 10493 is Nick Ashford's "When I Feel The Need". There's much more to Verve than the old favourites, like Howard Guyton, Youngblood Smith, or The High Keyes.

Among the big names in the credits are Benny Golson, and the Poindexter brothers, Richard and Robert. The top side has a full youtube posting to get the saliva flowing, but I was amazed that nobody has done the same for "Skate & Shuffle-Loo". It virtually defines Northern Soul as it was when I was growing up, and has one of those titles that never appear in the lyrics. It's mystifying why it wasn't called "Skate & Shing-A-Ling" instead.

This could be the finest record you bid on this year, and it's here in it's original black label format.

A. Strolling intro; dramatic, mid-tempo rhythm that picks up tempo as it progresses; would make a huge revival spin in the right hands; listen in full via the above youtube link.

B. Gargantuan stomper; the bass-line in the break will bust your ear drums; for die-hard talc users only; the opening line sets the scene: "There's a crazy place that I go to every Saturday night. There's a foxy chick that goes there too, man she got the place uptight". The only phrase that's always puzzled me seems to be "the girls don't need no hair", and always conjured up images of a sweaty club filled with bald ladies!

The vinyl is in stunning condition, and both sides play like new.

Both labels are immaculate, apart from an unobtrusive deletion hole.
