VERDELLE SMITH WAS A REAL LOOKER, WITH A VOICE TO MATCH; SHE FOLLOWED LABEL-MATE NANCY WILSON INTO THE LUCRATIVE SOUL-JAZZ FIELD, BUT IS USUALLY ONLY REMBERED FOR HER VERSION OF ADRIANO CELENTANO'S "IL RAGAZZO DELLA VIA GLUCK" - ANGLICISED TO "TAR AND CEMENT"; THE SINGLE ON OFFER HERE WAS THE FOLLOW-UP; IT'S A DRAMATIC BALLAD WITH A BEAT, AND BUILDING CHORUSES, BUT FAILED TO MAKE THE CHARTS; THERE ISN'T A YOUTUBE POSTING FOR THIS SIDE (ONE CLAIMS TO BE, BUT PLAYS "IF YOU CAN'T SAY ANYTHING NICE" INSTEAD); SO HERE IS THAT FOR THE 1967 BRITISH COVER BY SANDIE SHAW - Sandie Shaw - I Don't Need Anything - YouTube - JUST TO GIVE YOU A GENERAL IDEA

I LOVE THIS TRACK, WHICH IS A PIANO-LED BEAT BALLAD UNTIL SUDDENLY GIVING WAY TO DRAMATIC ORCHESTRATION AT THE BREAK; IT'S CERTAINLY BEAUTIFULLY-SUNG BY THE STUNNING LADY; BOTH SIDES WERE WRITTEN AND PRODUCED BY PAUL VANCE AND LEE POCKRISS, AND THIS SIDE IS THE ORIGINAL VERSION OF A TRACK THAT WAS MUCH BIGGER AT THE CASINO VIA GIA MATEO'S MORE UPTEMPO RCA COVER FROM THE FOLLOWING YEAR
