Linda Jones (1944 - 1972)

The death of Linda Jones, at the tender age of just 27, was one of soul music's most untimely losses. Who knows what this New York songstress would have gone on to achieve, had she not passed away so young. The instantly recognisable voice was there from her debut single, and even the use of an alias (Linda Lane) couldn't disguise the fact that something special was on the way. Very scarce 45s followed on Atco and Blue Cat, but it was with the classic "Hypnotized" that she finally made her mark, with the single peaking at #4 on the Billboard R&B chart. It was the first of seven singles released by Warner Bros., six of which appeared on their Loma offshoot. Linda also recorded a superb album for Loma, titled after her biggest hit, and which included the original version of "A Last Minute Miracle". When Loma ceased to operate, Linda had another monster Northern side put out on the main Warner Bros. label: "I Just Can't Live My Life (Without You Babe)" is more popular today than ever. A stay with Gamble and Huff's Neptune label saw the 60s out, and she was waxing a run of top-notch 45s for All Platinum's Turbo subsidiary, when she died suddenly - the victim of a diabetic coma.

I've still got the plain white cover which "My Heart Needs A Break" was sold in, and which shows that it cost me just £1, over thirty years ago. It only just missed out on making Kev Roberts' Northern Soul Top 500, bubbling under at number 510. I don't need to bore anyone by describing the sheer quality of this amazing record - just listen to the sound link if it's new to you. The arranger was Robert Banks, the produced was George Kerr, and the song was written by Sammy Turner - though his own original version wasn't issued at the time. Instead, Linda Jones created one of her finest performances, made plausible by the fact that she really was "twenty-three" when she recorded it, as referred to in the second verse.

In early 1968, Loma was in the middle of sprucing up it's logo design. Promotion copies of "My Heart Needs A Break" were given this new imagery, as seen in the youtube link. The ordinary issues, however, initially came out with the original plain yellow design, like the copy seen in this auction. When the song looked like selling in bigger numbers, the label was given the new green logo, and it was mainly this variety that ensured "My Heart Needs A Break" achieved a #50 R&B placing, in April 1968. There's also a Richard Tee-arranged deep soul ballad on the B-side, for those who enjoy mellower moments. The middle 'rap' is a memorable feature.

This one is currently priced by both Manship and Brown/Koppel at £150 for a minter.

The styrene apears to be almost unplayed, although I have certainly given it deck space over the years. The sound quality is still as good as new, and I don't think you'll see a better copy in a hurry.

Both labels are near-immaculate (a tiny amount of bubbling on each).

The edges are completely chip-free.
