60s GIRL GROUP NORTHERN SOUL/MOD

JACKIE BURNS & THE BO-BELLS

"I DO THE BEST I CAN"

b/w

"HE'S MY GUY"

(US: M-G-M K 13182, 1963; Special Disc Jockey Record)

Vinyl

Record conditon: Very good + (A); Excellent - (B) (both sides play Excellent ++)

Labels condition: Excellent +++

This wonderful mid-tempo dancer, has several spine-tingling moments. First, it's the wicked baritone sax that honks for a few bars during the intro. Next, it's the dreamy "wooh-ooh" femme backing, that adds some delightful moments throughout. A pianist plays a few plinky-plonky refrains, while Jackie sweetly leads in teen soprano style. It's totally captivating stuff, and one of those oldies that would brighten up an average spot. The B-side is a skipping slice of girl group magic, that's so reminiscene of Phil Spector's work with Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans, The Crystals, and The Ronettes. Unfortunately, there are no sound links, but Manship lists a demo at £75 in his 2005 guide.

The vinyl has a fair number of light-to-medium "spiders webs", mainly on the A-side. The B-side looks near to excellent. However, the play condition is almost perfect, with the exception of two brief ticks towards the end of the A-side. If these were ballads, you might hear more, but because there's so much going on, any imperfection is drowned out by the music.

Both labels have a very, very, very light degree of ring-wear, though almost non-existent.

The edges are completely chip-free.

This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated.

New postal rates:

One 7" single: £1.70; 30p per 7" afterwards.

One 12" single/LP: £2.70; 50p per 12"/LP afterwards.
