"Live to Tell" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 3rd album True Blue (1986). It later appeared on compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990), Something to Remember (1995) & Celebration (2009). The instrumental was shown to Madonna, who decided to use it for then-husband Sean Penn's film At Close Range. Madonna wrote all the lyrics & co-composed the melodies. A pop ballad, the song includes instrumentation from guitars, keyboards, drums & a synthesizer. Its lyrics deal with deceit, mistrust & childhood scars. It is also about being strong. "Live to Tell" was well received by music critics, who frequently refer to it as the best ballad of her career. It was a commercial success, becoming her 3rd #1 single on the USA Billboard Hot 100 & her 1st #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song faced controversy when she performed it on her 2006 Confessions Tour wearing a crown of thorns while hanging on a giant mirrored cross. The performance at Rome's Olympic Stadium was condemned as an act of hostility toward the Roman Catholic Church by religious leaders.
"Papa Don't Preach" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 3rd album True Blue (1986). The song also appears remixed on the 1990 compilation album The Immaculate Collection & in its original form on the 2009 compilation album Celebration. The song's musical style combines pop & classical styling & its lyrics deal with teenage pregnancy & abortion. The song was a commercial success upon release. It became Madonna's 4th #1 single on the USA Billboard Hot 100 & was a success internationally, reaching the top position in the UK & Australia. Music critics frequently cite it as a highlight on the album. The song caused heated discussions about its lyrical content. Women's organizations & others in the family planning field criticized Madonna for "encouraging" teenage pregnancy, while groups opposed to abortion saw the song as having a positive "pro-life" message. The song also caused her 1st conflict with the Vatican, as she dedicated it to Pope John Paul II, who urged fans to boycott her Who's That Girl World Tour in 1987.
"Pretender" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna from her 2nd album Like A Virgin (1984). Pretender starts with the chorus & then moves to the verse. It talks about seduction & the insecurity felt by a woman who feels that things are moving too quickly for her with her man.
"La Isla Bonita" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 3rd album True Blue (1986). The instrumental version of the song was 1st offered to Michael Jackson before Madonna accepted it & wrote the lyrics & melody. "La Isla Bonita" is noted for being the 1st Madonna song to contain Latino influences, with arrangements of Cuban drums & Spanish guitar, maracas, harmonicas & a mix of synthesized & real drumming. The lyrics of the song tell about a "beautiful island" & according to Madonna, was a tribute to the beauty of the Latinos. Upon release, it received positive critical reception & became Madonna's 4th #1 single in the UK, giving her the record for most #1 singles for a female artist. It also topped the charts in Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Iceland & Switzerland while reaching the top 5 in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden & the USA.
"Open Your Heart" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 3rd album True Blue (1986). It has since appeared remixed on the compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990) & Celebration (2009). Originally a rock & roll song titled "Follow Your Heart", it was written for singer Cyndi Lauper. Looking for new songs for True Blue, Madonna accepted it. She & Patrick Leonard transformed it into a dance-pop song. "Open Your Heart" is an innuendo-laden love song where Madonna expresses her sexual desire. The song was well received by critics, who commended its simplicity. It was also successful commercially, reaching the top-10 of the charts in Belgium, Canada, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, the UK & the top of the USA Billboard Hot 100, making it Madonna's 5th #1 single.
"White Heat" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 3rd album True Blue (1986). It was dedicated to actor James Cagney & named after the film of the same name from 1949. Two quotes from the original soundtrack were included in the song.
"Like a Prayer" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna from her 4th album of the same name. The track heralded an artistic & personal approach to songwriting for Madonna, who believed that she needed to cater more to her adult audience. Thematically, the song speaks about a passionate young girl in love with God, who becomes the only male figure in her life. "Like a Prayer" is a pop rock song & incorporates gospel music. It features background vocals from a choir & also a rock guitar. The lyrics contain liturgical words, but they have dual meanings of sexual innuendo & religion. "Like a Prayer" was acclaimed by critics & a commercial success. It was Madonna's 7th #1 single on the USA Billboard Hot 100 & topped the singles charts in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain, New Zealand & the UK. The song is one of the best-selling singles, selling over 5 million copies worldwide. Rolling Stone listed "Like a Prayer" among The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
"Act of Contrition" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna from her 4th album “Like A Prayer”. It features Madonna reciting the Catholic prayer Act of Contrition, then the vocals deteriorate into a monologue in which Madonna grows obstreperous over being denied a restaurant reservation.
"Express Yourself" is a song by American singer Madonna, from her 4th album Like a Prayer (1989). The song is included on the greatest hits compilation albums The Immaculate Collection (1990) & Celebration (2009). The song is a tribute to American funk & soul band Sly & the Family Stone. The main inspiration behind the song is female empowerment, urging women never to go for 2nd best & to always express their inner feelings. It is an upbeat dance-pop song that features instrumentation from brass, hand claps & drum beats, while the chorus is backed by the sound of saxophone & percussion. The lyrics talk about rejecting material pleasures & only accepting the best for oneself; subtexts are employed throughout the song. "Express Yourself" received positive reviews from critics, who applauded the gender equality message of the song & complimented it for being a hymn to freedom & encouragement to women & all oppressed minorities. Commercially, the song peaked at #2 on the USA Billboard Hot 100 & became Madonna's 6th #1 hit on the European Hot 100 Singles chart. It reached the top of the singles charts in Canada, Italy & Switzerland & the top 5 elsewhere.
"The Look of Love" is a song by American singer Madonna from the soundtrack album to the 1987 film Who's That Girl. Madonna requested producer Patrick Leonard to develop a downtempo song that captured the nature of her film persona. She later wrote the lyrics & melody to the backing track. Madonna was inspired by actor James Stewart's performance in the 1954 film Rear Window when writing the song. Featuring instrumentation from percussion, the song begins with a low bass synth line & a slow backing track, followed by Madonna singing the lyrics. Critically appreciated as a haunting track & noted as a "gem" on the album, it reached the top 10 of the charts in Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands & the UK. It also charted in France, Germany & Switzerland, while reaching the top 20 of the Eurochart Hot 100 Singles. Madonna's only live performance of the song was on her Who's That Girl World Tour in 1987. During the performance Madonna pretended that she was lost on the stage, like her film character.
