5 Christmas 78s for your juke box Chipmunks/G Miller…

Welcome to another 7845 ‘batch’ auction. This batch consists of five ‘better-heard-than-seen’ Christmas 78s for your juke-box or little lo-fi changer. These are far from perfect copies of these classics but should play fine (with a few ticks and a bit of surface noise) in the juke or on your little Califone player. There are some classic Christmas discs in this batch. Good luck.

THE CHIPMUNKS (Alvin, Theodore & Simon). London Liberty LI.55168. (Canadian press) The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)/Almost Good
Those little fellas sure know how to get David all riled up! No Christmas collection is complete without this scarce ‘late’ 1958 Canadian 78. # 1 for four weeks in late ’58.
This 78 visually grades a very much ‘pre-enjoyed’ V+ with scuffs, some rubs and some scratches, none deadly deep. Spot-checked. Plays fine with some mild surface noise and several light ticks throughout. Labels have light wear.

PATTI PAGE. Mercury 5534 (US) Boogie Woogie Santa Claus/The Tennessee Waltz.
Great stuff from Patti on this jumpin’ Christmas tune. Patti swings more than you might expect her to. Perfect for your Xmas juke. Although Boogie Woogie Santa Claus didn’t chart, the other side met with just a bit of success, like holding down the # 1 spot for thirteen weeks in late 1950. Note that ‘Tennesse Waltz’ was eventually issued with a different ‘B’ side.
Visually, this 78 just squeaks in at a low V+ with loads of scuffs, rubs and some light scratches, none deadly deep. Spot-checked. Presisng is LOUD – disc plays better than it looks with a touch of mild surface noise and a few ticks throughout, more on the quieter ‘Tennesse Waltz’ side. There is a scratch on the ‘Boogie Woogie Santa’ label.

GLENN MILLER/ALVINO REY. Bluebird B-11353 (Cdn) GLENN MILLER Jingle Bells (vocal – Tex Beneke, Ernie Careres and The Modernaires) Jingle Bells/ALVINO REY (Vocal-Four King Sisters) Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town
Here’s a great seasonal double sider from the height of the big band era. Glenn and the gang go down to Mexico for their ‘Jingle Bell’ time. On the flip, Alvino and the Four King Sisters pull off just the best version of Santa Claus Is Comin’ … with lots of nice lap steel from Alvino as well as the fabulous Four King Sisters dishing out the seasonal hip-kitty lingo like there is no tomorrow.
..the gent with a belly that’s shaped like a jelly with a doll for a Nellie is comin’ to town!!

This 78 visually grades somewhere between V+ and E- with lots of stacking rubs and some light scratches. Spot-checked. Plays fine with some mild surface noise and a few light ticks throughout. Labels are fine.

NAT KING COLE. Capitol C 1234 (Cdn) Mrs Santa Claus/The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot.
One of Nat’s more obscure Christmas singles.
This 78 visually grades a shiny E to E- (EE-) with some light rubs and a few very light scratches. Although, when you put the ‘A’ side on your turntable, it looks like there is some internal warping, the flaw doesn’t show up on the other side, making it some kind of pressing oddity. It doesn’t affect play at all. Spot-checked. Plays strong. There are water soluble stickers on both labels, removable with water and patience.

DINAH SHORE. Columbia C1396 (Cdn) Merry Christmas Polka/The Star Of Bethlehem.
Nice early fifties Christmas sides from Dinah.
This 78 visually grades a decent V++ with rubs, scuffs and some light scratches. Spot-checked. Plays fine with some mild surface noise and a few light ticks. Labels are fine.

Unless otherwise stated, 78s are carefully cleaned by hand before listing. Upon receiving, your only job will be to enjoy the music.
78s come in used but nice vintage green sleeves or, when possible, original paper sleeves.
I do my spot-checking and play testing on a Technics 1200 turntable with a Stanton 500 cartridge using a standard Stanton 2.7 stylus. The amp is a mid-70s Pro-Linear with the mono switch activated. The speakers are small professional recording studio monitors (Yamaha NS 10) that are known for being overly bright – great for spotting that mild surface noise!
I ship 78s as I like to receive them - using the four-sheet 10” cardboard sandwich, foam chips, 12" x 12" x 4 "(or 6") box method.
I use standard 78 grading (E+, E, E-, V+, V, V- etc). I’ll sometimes use double plus or minus signs to really hone in on the shape.
