In the 1950s, record labels pressed special promotional copies of songs — often labeled "Sample," "Promotional Copy," "Audition Record," or "Not For Sale" — that were distinct from the retail copies sold in stores.
These promotional/sample pressings are often rarer than the standard commercial release, since far fewer were made. Collectors prize them because they sometimes have unique labels, different mixes, or mono versions not available on the retail pressing.
78 RPM records were the dominant audio format through both the 1940s and into the mid-1950s.
Panart Records — Cuba's First Independent Label
In early 1950, Panart began selling the first long-playing (LP) records ever pressed in Cuba — a major milestone, coming right on the heels of Columbia's and RCA's 1949 rollout of the 33⅓ and 45 rpm formats in the U.S. Panart's success then opened the door for other Cuban labels —
By the 1950s Panart was selling over a million records annually, pressed in its own factory — the island's first — and played on Havana's 10,000 jukeboxes. The label captured the golden age of Cuban music
