A great opportunity to buy 2 different large glossy posters from April 1978, produced by Gallup to show the top 100 7" singles in the UK for w/e 21/4/78 and 28/4/78.
A great opportunity to purchase a now hard to find piece of British pop history. For those of you old enough to remember, GALLUP used to compile the official charts back in the day.
In 1978, the charts expanded to a top 75 and when Gallup replaced the British Market Research Bureau as the body which collected the sales data and compiled the charts, they expanded it to a top 100.
This chart that measures approx. 24” x 18” shows the top 100 singles for both w/e 21st April 1978 and w/e 28/4/78. I have tried to show as many pictures as possible for you to get a true reflection of how it looks. The first thing to note is that it is not in perfect, mint condition. It has odd nicks and flaws and has been folded into 4. In saying that, once it has been laid out and potentially framed, it would look great. I also sell it on it’s rarity value as well, as you do not often see this come up for sale. You may even just want to trim it down and keep the middle part, ie get rid of all the adverts surrounding it. The purple colour one is in better condition that the green one.
This may be of interest on 3 different fronts;
1. If your birthday was 21/4/78 or 28/4/78
2. If Night Fever by The Bee Gees means something to you, it is there, straight in at No3(21/4/78) and at No 1 the next week.
3. The main selling part from my point of view is to show the sparseness of punk/new wave type acts. Nothing higher than chart position 18!! for w/e 21/4/78 In chart order it says 18 Elvis Costello, 39 Devo, 49 The Vibrators, 55 Boomtown Rats, 58 The Jam, 69 Generation X, 73 The Stranglers, 76 Eddie And The Hot Rods, 85 The Clash, 89 The Buzzcocks and 93 Devo . So can you believe out of all of those type of acts DEVO get two top 100 positions, whilst Joe and the boys only get to number 85!!!!!
The reverse of the chart is then all b/w print of playlists from a variety of local radio stations and again you will note that not many punk/new wave acts were getting much airplay across the whole of the country
Needless to say, it would look great framed up and make a superb unusual gift for someone. A great birthday present, celebrating a Wedding Anniversary or any music enthusiast or general music fan, if you run a music themed pub or coffee shop etc. Something to show off that you know your friends will not have!
