Curly Ray Cline was born in 1923 in the hills of West Virginia near the little town of Gilbert. Following in the footsteps of his dad, who was an old time fiddler, Curly Ray began to play at an early age, learning many old time tunes that you can still hear him play. These are tunes that not many fiddlers know today. Curly Ray, along with his brother Ned and cousin Ezra Cline, organized a band called the “Lonesome Pine Fiddlers”. Ned was killed in World War Two, another brother, Charley Cline, joined the fiddlers and played with them off and on for several years. During the career of the fiddlers, they recorded several records with different recording companies. Several were instrumentals featuring the fiddle of Curly Ray Cline. Curly Ray left the fiddlers and joined Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys about two years ago at this time (December, 1968). He is still with the band and doing the fiddling on all my albums to date. This is Curly’s first album of his own and I think some of his best old time fiddling. Tunes like Red Dog and Black Mountain Blues have a special tuning on the fiddle, a sound that only Curly Ray can give them. One thing I think is very unusual is the Kentucky Fox Race. This was Curly Ray's own idea and I think a good one. This is a real live fox race taped in the hills of Pike County, Kentucky. One thing I would like to mention is the horn that Curly Ray blows in the beginning of the race was given to him by the President of Bill Monroe's fan club, Mr. Glen Mowery, Claremore, Oklahoma. Curly Ray is married and has four children.
