(Everyone) Dimension/SESAC Hundreds of people convened at the City Auditorium in Jackson, Mississippi, to be a part of a first! Never before had the songwriters of our fellowship been honored in such a way. The ranks of the United Pentecostal Church has been blessed with a great number of outstanding songwriters. It would not be possible within the limitations of one evening to honor them all. Thirteen songwriters were selected and all were there with the exception of Sharon Haygood, who was unable to attend because of the birth of her second child. The evening was a very exciting one as 12 very special people blessed an enthusiastic audience. Shirley Cohron, the Doug Davis Trio, Nancy Grand- quist, Joan and Murrell Ewing, the Terry Harper Trio, Ruth Munsey, Jimmy and Becky Pearce, Wanda Phillips, Bobbie Shoemake, Billie Smith, Janet Trout, and the Lanny Wolfe Trio each sang two of their most widely-known compositions. Many of these artists were backed up by the Jackson College of Ministries Chorale^nd musicians from the college. At 11:00 p.m„ over 500 people gathered at the Holiday Inn to enjoy fellowship and pay tribute to the songwriters who were being .honored. Life is made of memories. Truly, this night will long be remembered as a very beautiful memory. To God be all the glory, honor, and praise. Biographical Sketches.......Donna Barron Artwork.....................Bill Murphy February 9-13, 1976, will long be femerhbered by many people who attended the First National Music Ministry Conference. For several years, it had been a dream to have such a week for church choir directors and musicians. Many months of planning by many people culminated in a week that changed many lives and will have a monu- mental effect on the music program throughout the fellowship of the United Pente- costal Church. Two hundred and fifty seminar participants--not including husbands and wives of those who attended-represented churches from 28 states. The kickoff service on Monday evening was highlighted by an unforgettable mes- sage entitled, "The Unforgettable Institution of Zion " delivered by Reverend Murrell Ewing and set a beautiful keynote for the entire conference. Morning inspiration sessions included speakers Thetus Tenney, Bob Benson, Sr., Vice President of Heart Warming Records, Nashville, Tennessee, and Reverend Murrell Ewing. Day seminars included sessions on Music Ministry and Worship, Music Theory, Choral Conducting, New Horizons, the Choir Director's Wife, Vocal Hints and Tech- niques, Sound Considerations, Sources of Repertoire, Reading Sessions of New Mater- ials, Organ and Piano Selection, Leadership, Change, three seminars on Piano Technique, three seminars on Organ Technique, Black Gospel, and Songwriting. Seminar sessions were conducted by Lanny Wolfe, Marietta Wolfe, Wayne Goodine, Ron Dansby, Tom Tolleson, and Larry Williamson. Tuesday evening, the senior choir of the First Pentecostal Church presented a musical which included excerpts from the musical, "His Love Reaching". The musical set the stage for Sister Vesta Mangun, who challenged everyone to do better in what- ever they were doing as she delivered her timely message entitled, "A Musical Bi- centennial Celebration." Wednesday night marked the first service at the City Auditorium. The Lanny Wolfe Trio and Jackson College of Ministries Choir led the audience in worship with their annointed singing, after which Rev. Thomas L. Craft preached a very moving sermon about "The Sound of the Trumpet". Thursday evening, featuring "The Sounds of Pentecost--A Tribute to Pentecostal Songwriters," proved to be a very inspirational and exciting evening paying tribute to 12 of our finest songwriters. After the service over 500 people attended a banquet at the Holiday Inn in honor of the guest songwriters. The entire week of activities culminated in a festival of choirs, including four guest choirs from throughout the nation, and featuring a 300-voice mass choir which sang 10 songs that were rehearsed during the week. Special guests at the conference included Jeff Jeffrey of John T. Benson Publish- ing Company who provided two reading sessions reviewing new music coming out of John T. Benson Publishing Co. Jim Black, Nashville representative of SESAC and Gospel D.J. of the Year for the previous two years, attended the conference and parti- cipated in the songwriting seminar. In retrospect, it is impossible to comprehend what transpired in four days and five evenings. The excitement of people who wanted to learn so much was over- whelming, and so many of those attending the conference commented that they were so thrilled because they had received as much spiritually as they had in musical knowl- edge and help. This conference will be a landmark to the ministry of music in the United Pentecostal Church. If the Lord tarries, the Second National Music Ministry Conference is scheduled for February 21-25, 1977. Nancy Grandquist If the scripture is to be believed that we should "train up a child in the way it should go and when he is old he will not depart from it," then no further explanation is required to explain the talent of Nancy Grandquist. Her train- ing in music began at the age of 5 and has been a love of her life ever since. She began writing gospel songs at age 12. She has composed such songs as "Almost Home," "Let Me Give to the World," "Truth," "Jesus Will Give Me Grace," and "My Promise Land." Some of her songs have been published by Crown Royal. Most recently, Nancy has signed with Freedom Records of Greenville, South Carolina and her most recent songs have been published by Freedom Music Company. Nancy is the wife of evangelist Rev. Richard Grandquist and they reside in Exeterf California when not in revival. On her newest album she has a song about her little baby girl. Terry's industriousness and desire to learn more about music so that he could incorporate it into his call to the ministry caused him to come in contact with Lanny Wolfe at Gateway College of Evangelism. Because of his difficulty in reading the printed page, it was always a laborious task to do assignments; but, dedication to the cause proved to be more than enough to master excellence in the course work, achieving the requirements of a major in both Theology and Music. He did not begin composing until he was 21, but now has some 30 to 35 songs to his credit, including such songs as "He Gave Me Joy," "I'll be Leavin'," "Lord, I Need You," "I Found Myself in Jesus," and "Got a Little Heaven in Me." His songs are published by Crown Royal and John T. Benson Publishing Co., and have been recorded by the Downings, Sound Alliance and Free Spirit. He also received an honorary award in the American Song Festival for "Just One More Day". The Terry Harper Trio, including Terry's wife, Darda, and Sherron Coffey, have just recorded an album with Heart Warming Records. Terry is presently Minister of Music at the First Pentecostal Church in St. Louis, Missouri, where Rev- erend Ron Simmons is the pastor. Ruth Munsey Activity is the key to Ruth Munsey's world. In Hammond, Indiana, she occu- pies her time by serving in the capacity of Director of both the adult and high school choir, teacher of vocal music at the Hammond Christian Academy, and the Director of the Music Department of Hammond Evangelistic Temple where her husband is the pastor. She is the mother of 4 children. She has recorded several albums and her songs are published by Silverline and Hemphill. She has written such songs as "Hallelujah Anyhow," "Unfinished Task," "Hold Back the Night," "Only by the Name," "Let me be Worthy," and "Here Comes the Bride." Crawford Broadcasting listed "Here Comes the Bride" as the most requested number on al! stations when it was introduced. Her songs have been recorded by many groups including the Hemphills and the Le Fevres. Shirley Cohron By way of experience, travel, and time invested, Shirley Cohron has given more of her life to gospel music than the other artists being honored having traveled with the Rambos for several years, after which she married Rev. Will Cohron and they formed an evan- gelistic singing group called "The Apos- tolic Voices" who traveled extensively singing and preaching in United Pentecostal Churches through- out the nation. She and her husband are now pastoring a church in Jacksonville, Florida. She is also the mother of 2 children. Although she has had no professional training on the piano or organ, she began writing her own songs when she started singing professionally. Some of her songs have been recorded by artists such as the Downings, the Gaither Trio, Doug Oldham, the Speer Family, Gene Braun, The Thrasher Brothers, the Benson Singers, the LeFevre's, Jimmy Swaggart, and the Singing Deweys. Her songs are published by John T. Benson and include such titles as "He Never Changes"; "He's Every- where"; "Life Began for Me at Calvary"; "City of Gold"; "Prayer Changes Things"; and "He Must Die". "City of Gold" has been one of the most popular songs, reaching the Top 10 on the gospel charts. Doug Davis Doug began playing the piano at age 6 and wrote his first song at 7. His formal piano lessons began when he was 12 and he started serious composing when he was 16. Most songwriters are in- spired by incidents they are involved in... it was Doug's family leaving their home in Texas to begin a work in New York that eventually pro- duced the song "He Chose Me." His songs are published by Pleasant Ridge and Freedom Music Company, and include such songs as "Maybe This Will Be the Day", "There is Joy in Jesus" (recorded by the Torchbearers), "Falling in Love With Jesus", "Breathe on Me, Jesus", and "Follow the Cry of your Heart." Doug is currently serving in the capacity of Music Director at Gateway College of Evangelism, where he is directing three choral groups, teaching piano, organ, and voice. On week- ends, he travels with his trio. Joan Ewing Anyone who knows Joan Ewing can appreciate the part of creative genius that comes from organization. She has more songs in her piano bench than Lanny Wolfe has registered with John T. Benson Publishing, as her songs have not been published. But writing a song does not require an intellectual greatness alone. . .it also requires an ability to relate a personal experience to others. Joan Ewing possesses such a gift and has blessed us with such songs as "Nearing Home," "Whatever You Think Christ To Be," "The Potter's Field," "New House," "Take Me Home Last," and "Don't Let Me Stand Without a Star in My Crown." Joan is the wife of Reverend Murrell Ewing, pastor of Eastwood United Pentecostal Church in Lake Charles, Louisi- ana and Conqueror's President for the Louisiana District. They have 2 children. Many of Joan's songs become a musical interpretation of her husband's sermons. His magnificent baritone voice complements Joan's songs in a very beautiful way and he has just recorded a solo album containing 10 of Joan's songs which will be released soon. Jimniy Pearce If you asked someone how Jimmy Pearce became a songwriter, they would probably tell you that it just had to happen. The key to his talent and the message of his songs is sincerity. Prior to September, 1975, he wrote exclusively for Crown Royal Publishing Company. His career, though not as long as some represented here tonight, has covered a period of some six years. Some songs to be credited to him are "It's a Good Life Living for the Lord," "He Rescued Me," "It's My Desire," "No Time for Jesus." His song, "He Rescued Me," was Number One for 10 weeks in Los Angeles in 1975. Groups such as the Downings, the LeFevres, the Blackwood Brothers, Sherman Andrus of the Imperials, and Willie Wynn have recorded his songs. Jimmy and his wife, Becky, are presently traveling full time singing in churches throughout our fellowship. Their home base is Evangelistic Temple in Hammond, Indiana. Wanda Phillips By the time Wanda Phillips was 9 years old, she was playing the piano and organ and singing with a trio in the church in Alexandria, Louisiana. Since that time, her singing and playing have blessed audiences in camp meetings and con- ferences across our fellowship. She began writing songs at age 20, and her songs have been published by Discovery Downing and include such titles as "Lord, Don't Take Your Love From Me," "Lord, Keep My Feet From Turning Back," and "In His Presence." She has recorded several albums, and her songs have been recorded by such groups as the Down- ings and many of our Pentecostal singers. She is the wife of Rev. Kenneth Phillips, who pastors the First United Pentecostal Church in Austin, Texas, and thjjy have two children, a boy and a girl. Janet Trout Janet Trout is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. A.D. Varnado, retired mission- aries to Jamaica, and wife of Rev. Wayne Trout, who pastors two churches -- the First United Pentecostal Church in Dover, Delaware, and the United Pentecostal Church in North East, Maryland. Janet is the Director of Christian Education at both churches, the general manager of three bookstores owned by their church and the director and principal of the church school. She is also the mother of 2 children. She has recorded several albums and has written approx- imately 20 songs which are published by Township Group (a Division of Mark Five). Some of her songs are "Hands of the Nazarene," "Somehow, I'll Know," "Lord, I Want to Learn to Lean on Thee," "I Needed the Quiet," "I Was Born to Love the Lord," and "I've Been There." Billie Smith At age 7, Billie Smith began taking piano lessons and singing in church, but it wasn't until about 7 years ago that she began to write songs. She has written approximately 25 songs and some of them are "The Best Is Yet to Come", "Let My God Love You," "Revival of Faith," "Go Tell Somebody," and "Will We Neglect Them." She has recorded several albums at Benson Sound Studios in Oklahoma City. Billie is the wife of Reverend Dale Smith, who pastors the First United Pentecostal Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They have three children. Bobbie Shoemake Bobbie Shoemake is the wife of Rev. Jimmy Shoemake who pastors the First United Pentecostal Church in San Jose, California, and she is the mother of 3 children. She has been singing and playing since she was a small child, but just began writing songs in the last few years. Her most well-known song is probably "I'll Keep Holding on to Jesus" which was the title song on an album recorded by the Kenny Parker Trio. Her repertoire of songs is steadily increasing, and she has recently recorded an album on the Manna Label which con- tains several new songs, including "The Race I Have Begun." She also has several other albums previously recorded. Lanny Wolfe Lanny Wolfe is one of the leading songwriters in the gospel music field today. In 1974, his song, "Greater is He That is in Me," was nominated as one of the Top Ten Songs of the Year by the Gospel Music Association. In 1975, he received the Gospel Music Association nomination for Best Gospel Composer, Best Gospel Album of the Year, and had two songs in the Top 10 Songs of the Year ("Greater is He That Is in Me" and "God's Wonderful People") He was the only composer with two songs in the Top 10. He also received the 1975 SESAC Award for Gospel Songwriter of the Year. His songs are published by John T. Benson Publishing Co., and the Lanny Wolfe Trio has just recently recorded their sixth record album on the Heart Warming label entitled "A Brand New Touch." Their records receive extensive air play on radio stations across the nation and Lanny's music is used by churches of many different denominations. Some of his most well-known songs are "Only Jesus Can Satisfy Your Soul," "I Love Him Too Much", "Jesus Be the Lord of All", "There's Something in the Air", "One Day Too Late," "Greater Is He That Is in Me", and "God's Wonderful People". His songs have been recorded by numerous gospel groups, some of which are: The Speer Family, The Downings, Doug Oldham, the Blackwood Brothers, Henry and Hazel Slaughter, Dallas Holm, Truth, and Jimmy Swaggert. "Greater Is He That Is in Me" is the official closing song on the weekly Oral Roberts telecast. In addition to being an accomplished musician and having a Master's Degree in Music Education, Lanny also has a B.S. in Business Education and a Master's Degree in Business Admin, and Education Admin. He has taught 3 years in public school and 9 years in Bible College. In spite of all the opportunities he has for financial and popularity advancement, the burden of his heart is to train young people in the ministry of music, and this burden can be felt in his music and seen in his life as he has dedicated it completely to the work of the Lord. Lanny, his wife, Marietta, and their two daughters, Lanna- Marie and Lanita, live in Jackson, Miss., where he is Minister of Music at the First Pentecostal Church and Dean of the School of Music at Jackson College of Ministries.
