Few bands embodied the pure excess of the '70s like Queen. Embracing the exaggerated pomp of prog rock and heavy rock dynamic bold mixes, the British quartet delved deeply into camp and bombast, creating a huge, mock-operatic sound with layered guitars and overdubbed vocals. Queen's music was a bizarre yet highly accessible fusion of the macho and the fey. For years, their albums boasted the motto "no synthesizers were used on this record," signaling their allegiance with the legions of post- Led Zeppelin hard rock bands. But vocalist Freddie Mercury brought an extravagant sense of camp to the band, pushing them toward kitschy humor and pseudo-classical arrangements. Although Freddie Mercury was a flamboyant bisexual who managed to keep his sexuality in the closet until his death from AIDS. Nevertheless, his sexuality was apparent throughout Queen's music, from their very name to their veiled lyrics
"Day At THe Races" is one of their best albums, a total Queen classic. On one level, its title is a reference to the band's operatic pretensions, best in evidence here on the classic "Bohemian Rhapsody," which took some 70 hours to record, and now is widely regarded as one of the most significant rock songs in history.
Of course, A Night at the Opera was also the title of a Marx Brothers movie, and the reference isn't lost on Queen, who seldom scaled the heights of pomprock without a knowing wink. Like all groups, Queen's most easily distinguished trait is a knack for manipulating dynamics. But what sets them apart is their selection of unlikely effects: keys, harp, acapella vocals, no synthesizers. ripping WILD guitar thatrics...coupled with good songs, Queen's obviously the strongest contender in this field.
One of the most expensive album ever made, A Night At The Opera is remembered for its meticulously produced bombast, but the truth is that there's a wide variety of material here, from the gorgeous piano-based "You're My Best Friend" and the McCartneyesque "39" to the music-hall-style "Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon" and the pedal-to-the-metal heavy rockers "Death on Two Legs" and "I'm in Love with My Car."
In case there was any doubt that Queen was devoted to over-the-top effects, this massively overdubbed combination of hard rock and opera, paced by May's monster guitar riffs and Mercury's million-voiced choir and emotive solo singing, should have erased it. As history records, it went to number one…for ever. Christmas 1975 was to be forever remembered as Queen’s. And A Night at the Opera remains their finest hour.
