Lutheranism is a major branch of Western Christianity that identifies with the teachings of the sixteenth-century German reformer Martin Luther. Luther's efforts to reform the theology and practice of the Roman Catholic Church launched the Protestant Reformation and, though it was not his original intention, left Western Christianity divided.

The split between Lutherans and the Roman Catholic Church arose mainly over the doctrine of justification before God. Specifically, Lutheranism advocates a doctrine of justification "by grace alone through faith alone because of Christ alone," which varied from the original Roman Catholic view of "works in addition to faith". Certain Roman Catholic Bishops no longer hold this view. Lutheranism is also distinct from the Reformed Churches, another major church which arose during the Reformation. Unlike the Reformed Churches, Lutherans have retained many of the sacramental understandings and liturgical practices of the pre-Reformation Church. Lutheran theology differs considerably from Reformed theology in its understanding of divine grace and predestination to eternity after death.

Today, millions belong to Lutheran churches worldwide; furthermore, the world's 400 million Protestant Christians can trace their tradition, at least in part, back to Luther's reforming work.

The Bible and the Lutheran Confessions
Lutherans believe that the Bible, as a divinely inspired book, is the source of all revealed divine knowledge. Scripture alone (Sola scriptura) is the formal principle of the faith, the final authority for all matters of faith and doctrine.

The Book of Concord, published in 1580, contains ten documents which some Lutherans believe are faithful and authoritative explanations of Holy Scripture. Besides the three Ecumenical Creeds, which date to Roman times, the Book of Concord contains seven credal documents articulating Lutheran theology in the Reformation era.

The mission of Camp Lutherhoma is to Nurture Discipleship in Jesus Christ, in outdoor settings, which excite believers to share the love of Christ to the world.

At the Bottom of Tinkiller Lake
The first Oklahoma Lutheran camp was held in 1928 and called "Summer Conference Camp of the Oklahoma District Walther League".  This was held for 3 years, skipping 1930, at Heart-O-Hills' camp near Welling OK. The first permanent campsite was purchased in 1933, consisting of 30 acres at Standing Rock along the Illinois River. Rev. Louis Theimer served as the first dean of camp.  It started as a camp where Walther Leaguers came to fellowship together and hear God’s Word in natural settings. Rev. Walther Haefker began as director in 1937.

The Big Move East of Tahlequah
Lutherhoma moved to its current site in 1950 when the Illinois River was dammed to create Lake Tenkiller.  Many of the buildings were moved from the old site to its current location east of Tahlequah.  Some additional buildings were acquired, including an old army chapel, from Camp Gruber, which became the present dining hall. Smaller cabins and the caretakers's nome wer moved intact from the old site. All was finished and ready for summer camp in 1951. The first family camp was held at the new site in 1954. Theimer Hall, the first winterized retreat building, was dedicated in 1962.

Camp Lutherhoma in the 70's and 80's
In 1968 the ownership of the property was transfered from the Walther League to the Oklahoma District-LCMS. In 1978 the LOMA was formed, with inter-Lutheran leadership. In 1981 the first swimming pool was built.

What's happened since 1988
The Oklahoma District disbanded the LOMA in 1988. AT the OK Dist. LCMS convention that year a resolution was passed to support Lutherhoma with it's finances and by calling a full time camp director. In 1989 the camp welcomed John Busch and his family as director, and Daniel Overman and his family as caretaker. Two new bathhouses wer built, one in each cabin area. Programming was increased in the non-summer months. The Group Initiative Course, or challenge course, was begun, which attracted many retreat groups and summer campers.
 
Capital Campaign Funds Cabins and New Pool
A fund raising campaign started in 2004, called "His Hope, His Promise, His Future" This campaign raised slightly more than $1 million, which allowed the camp board to complete a new swimming pool and 2 new retreat cabins. The Cabins, called Pine and Aspen, are fully furnished and highly comfortable for retreat guests. These cabins are designed with adult and family retreats in mind. In the year since we opened them we have had a very significant increase in retreat groups.

Programs Now Offered
Camp continues to have a wonderful summer program for all ages. The summer begins with the Memorial Day Work Weekend for families and groups to come and help get camp ready for the summer. The summer then is full of week long sessions for campers 6-18 years of age. Adventure Options and Adventure Trips fill the summer with many exciting activies such as mountain biking, rock climbing, challenge course and river rafting. The summer ends with the Labor Day Family Camp, drawing many families to enjoy God's creation together while having comfortable acommodations in Pine and Aspen or in Theimer and the summer cabins. Year round programs continue to grow, including Journey In January, Fruitful In February and many others. Each April we have our annual Golf Tournament fund raiser.
 
What's coming
Plans are always being made for the future. Our goals are to renovate the summer cabins so that they are more climate controlled. We also want to build an outdoors kitchen and rock eating area near the new retreat cabins. We also have sights on a new dining hall, but keeping the old dining hall and converting it into a museum and coffee shop.
 
Future Programming
The camp board and the camp staff are also always striving to improve the programs that we offer. Now that we have the retreat cabins we can think of many opportunities to help guests come closer to Jesus. Be watching for all the creative ideas that you can be part of!
