1973 Original first pressing vinyl of one of the great lost early 70's HEAVY ROCK outfits known as GRANICUS ... influenced by early Zeppelin, these all-out rockers were evil mean & nasty with wail-fire vocals amid tight revved up heavy guitar action and skull pounding rhythms ...A SCREAMER!
Granicus - the site where Alexander the Great achieved his first major victory over the Persians ... also the name of this obscure mid-'70s Cleveland rock outfit ... And judging by their self-titled 1973 album, the short-lived quintet were actually awesome, when talking obscure USA hard rock.
As native Americans guitarist Wayne Anderson, drummer Joe Battaglia, bassist Dale Bedford, singer Francis Leffel and rhythm guitarist Al Pinell must have been relative novelties in the early-'70s. Produced by Martin Last and Pete Spargo, we've seen 1973's "Granicus" advertised on various dealer lists as psychedelic. It's not. These guys are firmly in the 70's high wirded loud and brash early Led Zepplin camp. So impressive, lead singer Leffel had been targeted to Jimmy Page to replace Robert Plant in times when things were not going well in Zeppelin.. One thing for sure, Leffel's dynamic voice meets Plants' and then some ...and when accompanied by Anderson's blazing lead guitar and Pinell's rhythm guitar, material such as "Bad Talk", "Cleveland, Ohio" and the 11 minute plus "Prayer" is powerful and tuneful --where singer Leffel reaches orgasmic heights over the furious screaming guitars. A must. The energy of this LP is incredible. The jammer, "Twilight" is also interesting. Sporting a pretty melody line, we kept expecting it to explode into a power ballad ... luckily it doesn't.
Overall, the album will keep the listener awake ...well worth the admission price.
