Metal Man Has Hornet's Wings
Classic Frank Zappa Bootleg LP - Reputedly the very first. This issue has been pressed on translucent orange vinyl. See http://www.beefheart.com/datharp/albums/boots/metalman.htm for more information.
I bought this at a second-hand vinyl LP fair in Sydney in the early 1990s. Since then I've played it no more than half-a-dozen times. It's in good condition with no scratches and has always been stored safely amongst all my other vinyl. I take good care of my vinyl and I can guarantee no one else has even touched it since I bought it.
I will not, however, make any claims to any skill at properly grading its quality so I won't even try. All I can say is that I played it very recently and it's still in as good a condition as when I bought it - which I reckon is pretty good. Like any thirty year old vinyl it's a bit crackly in places, with occasional pops and clicks but it's possible a good wash will clear these. And if you're thinking of digitising it to MP3 it'll almost certainly clean up very easily.
The cover is intact , though a bit grubby, with the edge and surface scuffing you'd expect from it living in general vinyl collections for thirty years. The back of the cover appears to have had a label ripped off it at some stage (but before I bought it).
I've found only one oblique reference to an orange coloured pressing of this LP. My guess is that it's a fairly rare piece of Zappa bootleg history, which is essential listening for any Zappa fan.
It's an interesting collage of early Zappa and Beefheart works, apparently taken from a radio program in the 1970s. Most tracks include a few comments from Frank, in his inimitable style.
